Assuming it's just total points won/lost ratio over all group matches, then Wang Yidi advances with a 4-0 win. Yuan is 50% (71-71), and Wang will be over 50% with a 4-0 win (She's 32-35 going into the match, and must win each game by at least 2 points, so minimum +8 total points).

Wang Yidi will move on. There’s no way she loses any games to Shao after winning the first 2
Even if she wins the next two games, she has a 5-5 tie with YJN and the tie breaker is head to head games and points, so she is done.

Oh really? Then I don’t know why commentator keeps mentioning that Yuan’s supposed to be worried cause she clearly isn’t

If that's the case (and the commentator doesn't know what he's talking about) then you're right, she's done.

Because they didn't follow what happened last year with Groth and Harimoto, unless the rules have changed for this year.

Even the commentators and ITTF staff responsible for the social media were confused last year.

It's so sad that ittf creates this confusing format and doesn't make sure the commentators fully understand it. Because even the standings will show the wrong results like it did last year for Groth and Harimoto.

Shao Jieni's only chance was in game 1. She only has speed in straight rallies and you're never going to beat CNT with that game. Should have called a timeout at 9-9.

  • 3.10. Matches of Stage 1 shall be 4 games (result 4-0,3-1 or 2-2).
  • 3.11. Final ranking will be determined in terms of Regulation 3.7.5, excluding match points, and based solely on the ratios of wins to losses first in games and then points, as far as is necessary to resolve the order.
So what is this Regulation 3.7.5? That wasn’t in the guide.

It's in the ITTF Handbook.

3.7.5.2 If two or more members of the group have gained the same number of match points their relative positions shall be determined only by the results of the matches between them, by considering successively the numbers of match points, the ratios of wins to losses first in individual matches (for a team event), games and points, as far as is necessary to resolve the order.

Very annoying not to know the results for sure. The group standings format suggests it's just the ratio of total games won and then points won because that's what's displayed. In which case Wang Yidi advances. On the other hand I remember the confusion from last year, and Wang didn't seem happy when she won, so easily could be that head to head games/points ratio is the only thing that counts, in which case Yuan advances. The announcer thinks it's Wang. I'll go with NextLevel and Zeio and guess it's Yuan. Maybe one day we'll find out.

Here it says “match points” in the handbook. Does that apply to the points too or only to the games? Because by the name ”match points” one’d think it applies to points and Wang Yidi and Jia Nan Yuan don’t have equal amount of points, only games.

The rules were originally written in the context of 3 or 4 person groups when you could have 2 wins and 1 loss or 1 win and 2 losses and tie with other people. The first tie breaker is head to head results determined by match (well those are usually tied when 3 players have 1 win and 2 losses and the top player had 3 wins), then games (usually breaks the tie, but in rare cases, all matches could be 3-0 or 3-2 or 3-1 etc.) and then points (very rare but it has happened before).

The main point is that only the results between the players in the tie are used to break the tie. So results in other matches do not matter.
