The word on the street is that they originally had a venue (nice one) that was separate from Orleans for tables 2, 3 and 4, but it fell through last second and they had to pivot into the temporary tent.

Obviously not an ideal situation, but I would not be so quick to judge wtt/organizers because we don't know what happened with the original deal and how much of it was their fault vs the venue overbooking or taking a more lucrative event, etc. They DID plan on something more professional with better conditions than what we are seeing now so can't knock them there.

if we talk about rules, they can make any rules they want,
provided they are able to enforce such rules
and it should be the responsibility of ITTF to enforce, not the players.
I do think players should complain more. When we amateurs usually complain opponents get offended and come up with lazy excuses here, but this is a pro environment. Anything you say shouldn't get shrugged off and while calls have been more frequent I don't think most umpires pay attention to serves or don't have the guts to call them. Hopefully with TTR as a supporting tool the situation improves.

if you recall the Apolonia incident with his dialogue with the umpire.
its a waste of time speaking to umpires.

I actually disagree, unless the kinks on service calls are ironed out and technology that is accessible to players are used to make the calls. The rules were designed to make it hard to cheat and easier for umpires to make calls. You asking dor a return to the rules that require tech to enforce.

For example, they actually wanted the toss rule to be 3 inches but it was going to be hard to tell 3 inches. So to make it indisputable they made it 6 inches so that one had to toss and now we are having issues with backward tosses and exit angles. People are also using hand and ball separation which is very inaccurate and tends to disagree with electronic evaluation.

When the ball goes behind the body of the server, it is very distracting and there is no guarantee of visibility at contact from the perspective of the receiver because not just the head can be used to hide but the shoulder or arm as well. This makes it harder for the umpire to judge. The problem is that servers have refused to serve in front of the body and then umpires have refused to call the dubious serves behind the plane of the body so they have left enforcement without umpires in the stone ages, when literally if you enforced the rules, the serves should be a breeze to call from anywhere someone is sitting. That Miu Nagasaki doesn't get faulted just about every time she does her backward toss is amazing. These are easy calls to make if you focus on the fact that the serve is behind the body.

If most serve rules require only professional players to enforce them, then we might as well get rid of them outside the professional sport IMHO. But that is my opinion.

That's nice in theory but that rule was never enforced until now, when tech is used to enforce it.

Yes at the professional level but not at the club level. You are advocating taking away the protections the club players need at a time when clubs cannot support it. That's my point.

It's also never called at the club level though, even when umpires are present.

My take on it: let TT die in America, not a big deal, as it is not taken seriously there. Between what they did to Hugo and now this sh.t with a an MLTT-like crowd, not a single american able to pass the first round (sorry, yeah Amy Wang did... vs Lilly Zhang... *cough*) with plenty of wild cards, stop it please. Brazil deserves a big tournament way more than the US do.

After watching today's match and comparing the results of Togami and Uda vs Alexis, is @zeio still seriously of the opinion that Uda has surpassed Togami? Is zeio willing to prove he is able to argue over the powers of ants to move mountains?
Uda came into the US Smash right from a domestic team tournament in which he won that lasted from 6/26-29.

How much he recovered is anyone's guess, aside from the severe jet lag and all the issues in QR.

It depends on what and who is umpiring. And what you will be doing is making the umpire completely unable to make those calls without guessing.

Oh well. I was expecting a response like this. If Togami came from a similar tournament, we would never know about it. And ultimately, you take responsibility for your results at the table.

Togami's case is different as he considers himself the top JNT player but his results do not back that up, which he has admitted.

Uda is also a former All-Japan Champion and was the reserve player for Tokyo 2020. If JTTA didn't change the selection criteria for Paris 2024, Uda as the second JNT player in WR for much of 2022 could have turned out way differently.
