so, in my competing career I was never fond of chinese rubbers. probably because of the bad experience I had when my dad put one of the Friendship 729 rubbers onto my blade in order to get my backhand going. and everything I remember was - tacky as hell ... but sloooooow!! dead snails were going faster ...

so when I got back into table tennis in 2023, even though everyone was praising the Hurricane 3 Neo and there were a lot of players around me with it on the blade I was really reluctant to try it ... but during WTT Ljubljana I met with DHS representatives for my country, and for I good price, I got Hurricane 8 40, Hurricane 3 Neo commercial 38 and Hurricane 9 Violet. I first tried Hurricane 8 40 ... and ... I liked it ... a lot. H3N was fitted onto a blade which is sort of prototype but I struggled with it, even though that blade is extremly bouncy. then I gave Hurricane 9 Violet a chance, but was planned to be on BH and it was not a good match for my BH ... that was on Xiom TMXi blade. at the time I also got the Xiom Hugo ALX Pro blade and H9V went on new blade as a FH and Rakza Z as BH. it was great. except - the combo was quite quite heavy. and even though I really liked the combo, HV9 was taken of the blade. then H8 went onto ALX and it was still very likeable.

then I finally got the booster (Falco Tempo Long) ... two layers on H3N, H8 and H9V and these are the results:

- H3N: very very likeable, much better feel after boosting, very similar to the Dignics9c. and it is still bellow 50g weight cut. but that was with that prototype blade I have
- H8: it didn't go well, if it was nice to play with before boosting, after boosting ... something is not going well with me, I just cannot feel the ball. but then again, it was with AXL blade which, no matter how much I tried, I couldn't like. maybe I will give it a another try on different blade
- H9V: no difference whatsoever, except that it is even heavier now (and possibly a bit more tackier)

later on I also kind of got/traded in a Hurriccane 3 Neo National BS 40. I already got it boosted (Haifu Seamoon), but honestly, as much as I was looking forward to playing with it, it was quite a dissapointment ... strange throw, strange feeling, once it flies like crazy, next time ball just dies into the net. but that was on my new AZXi blade, maybe these two just don't go well together.

so, after this experience, I am eager to try more - I was thinking of getting H8-80 for BH, but since H9V has the same sponge and it didn't go well with my BH, I scrapped this. plus, the weight.
what I would like to know is - how much difference there is between Hurricane 3 of "old"? non-NEO, if you like. there are so many different versions that I do not know where to go next. also - I would preferably skip boosting, does that mean only Hurricane 8 would be the right choice then?

I read a lot about commercial versions of Hurricane and am affraid that the next sheet might be something completely different. so, basicaly, looking for some input about how to choose the right Hurricanes to try. and yes, I do have the stroke technique to go into the equation ... ;)

Honestly, if you like H8-40 out of the box, why not stick with that?
H3 non neo is basically vanilla, and Neo is lightly pre-tuned and pre-glued.
Don't expect that tuning to be much else than taking the roughest edge off.

I know what you mean about the 729 story though... It was hurt at first, but when it breaks in (and if it does before it gets holes in the topsheet) it's a hard wearing and hard working piece of kit.

H3 neo its probably the best rubber in the world atm, but NEVER buy the commercial version (really bad QA issues), only go for the provincial (my recommendation), the national or the player versions depending on your wallet.

When boosting them (I use sea moon 2 / jie chi green), I go like this:

For the forehand, go either 40°, 41° or 42° blue sponge and then this ones need 3 layers of booster (boost then wait 12 hours x 3 times, then glue on blade)

For the backhand, go either 37° or 38° orange sponge and then this ones need 2 layers of booster (boost then wait 12 hours x 2 times, then glue on blade)

Good luck.

Recently, I have been testing some blades and rubbers and my current opinion is that H3 is the best FH rubber for my style. H3N bs national vs H3 bs provincial with one layer seamoon 2 and one falco platinum are very similar in playing characteristics. I don't know of other rubber with so many speed gears. It has a slightly tacky topsheet but the spin is higher than sticky rubber like TDE. LAC has a bit better response in medium gears, but at low and high speed, control drops. Also LAC durability is terrible, the sponge is breaking, so no easy change of glue. H3 provincial can be found for 3/2 of LAC price. Boosting does not improve LAC at the same level as boosting H3.

It is good to mention that falco platinum doesn't evaporate at room temperature. I have a droplet on a metal surface for over 2 months with minimal change in initial volume. In comparison, the droplet of seamoon 2 is gone after just 2 weeks. So, I guess that DHS is using oil similar to falco platinum in prodution of NEO variants.

All that is coming from allround player who hate fast tensors.

funny, I have the H3 Neo, commercial and I find it better as the national version ... 🙈
like I said - I already played with H3N on FH and H9V on BH and generally liked the feel, but didn't like the weight (H3N 48g, which is okay but H9V is hefty 57g ... whole blade had 201g!).

you are quite right ... I mean, okay, boosting didn't go well with H8, but out of the box playability was quite surprising. I did have the 40, 2.2, so maybe going down in thickness could be even better. does the 39 hardness have the same sponge or it is different sponge then? what do you mean by H3 non neo being vanilla? :p

🤔 ... as I'm 66 and retired now, I got the recommendation, to use H8 instead of H3. Is it really a more helpful, forgiving rubber?

I still feel strong, but I'm losing the ability, to keep relaxed with strong topspins. Also, as I'm playing in a lower amateur league, most of my opponents avoid a "good" playing with strong rallies. So at matches I need to handle soft, wobbling balls, often half long.

I already returned to Hybrid MK 2.0 on my backhand and gave the same rubber in Max a tried on my forehand. It works, and I'm sure I could adapt. But I miss the Chinese rubber on my forehand too much. So again, will the H8 be a reasonable compromise for me?

TIA

I forgot to mention: meanwhile, I'm also playing with Long 5X

Can you tell much difference between provincial and national? Also do u use sponge 2.1 or 2.15 is there any specific reason over using one over the other.

I have been using h3N prov bs 2.15 40 for while now. A year on 40 and prior to that 2 years on 39. Much prefer 40

My goal was to find good allround rubbers and feed the EJ demons.

I can compare next 3 rubbers with 3–4 months of play:
H3N BS national BS 2.1mm 39deg without boost,
H3 provincial BS 2.2mm 39deg 1+1 layer Seamoon 2 and falco platinum,
H3N provincial OS 2.1mm, 38deg 1+1 layer Seamoon 2 and falco platinum.

There is no difference in topsheet quality of national and provincial black rubbers. 2 layars of boost gave the NEO filing to H3. The red H3N OS is more sticky and has better spin and control near the table. I can't find the difference between 2.2 and 2.1mm for the black BS rubbers. Now I am thinking why H3 2.2mm is cheaper — because after boosting, the total rubber height can be higher than the legal 4mm.

All rubbers are coming from alliexpress, so they can be national, provincial or something else.

yes. H8 is much more forgiving. but … there is always a but … it is still quite a demanding rubber to play with. but since you are already used to playing with chinese rubbers, it shouldn’t be a problem.

also - H8 and boosting, in my experience, doesn’t go well together. I preferred it unboosted. after boosting it got this really low trajectory which was extremely uncomfortable and tricky to play with … maybe it is just me, but I share my experience. you know, sharing is caring. ☺️

why not try a Loki Rxton 3 PRO for your FH
