On my side, I think it's way weirder when some are arguing over and over, fo hours and days, about how some players can be bad, and asking for retirement or stuff like that.
Like they really have something to say or decide about others people carrier and willing...
But it's a TT fan place, so, we have to accept this passion, in one direction or another, I guess.
You don't say. They really do. FZD said fandom was a major reason he left the scene. WYD was forcibly removed from the race for Paris 2024 after constant public outcries.

Many JNT players actually keep track of online discussion about them.

I actually made the folks fix WCT's weakness against lobs by blasting them on the local forum.

You cannot possibly think that the Olympic champion retiring prematurely, due to the constant pressure from "fans", social media and consequent burn-out, is a good thing... right?

It's not about good or bad. The point Nakira was trying to make is about whether public opinion has a bearing on the players. The answer is clear in FZD's response.

I've touched on this in the past. Folks in the West have had lives way too easy for the last 80 years. Many of you are, in Cantonese, 堅離地.

80 years is clearly stretching it, 2025-80=1945 = end of World War II which left "the West" in ruins.

I do agree that we have a priviledge based on where we grew up compared to most parts of the world.
If the West was left in ruins, then East Asia and South East Asia were a living hell, from the Western colonial era to the 大東亜共栄圏 that lasted close to 300 years.

Western people can also be extremely touched by online harassment, even with an easy life.
Globally, in every countries, the happiest ones are the ones who only mind their own business. As much as it is allowed, of course.

I already foresaw the fandom culture back at the start of the T2 APAC in 2018.

Zhou Dao, WTT China Media Director, said at a Peking University seminar that WTT is supporting the livelihood of a group of 代拍. That's the direction they want table tennis to go. WTT is the here to stay. Like Ronnie Chan advised, get used to it.

What does this have to do with qualified professionals having to succumb to pressures coming from the unqualified general public?

They don't have to succumb if they don't want it. They (FZD and WCT in this case) are on government payroll so the general public has the right to have a say in how the tax money is used.

IIRC, Yan An revealed in a recent live stream that CNT players get to keep all WTT prize money now unlike in the ITTF eras.

Damn. I saw Sabine drop the first set last night, figured it would be a comfortable 3-0 to the Chinese so went to bed. Woke up and found out she won!

Now excuse me while I go and order some anti from TT11
Let me know if Winter's FH is on sale available at TT11. I am willing to pay a premium.
