I'm not surprised G1 is used for beginners.
I think G1 is a specially balanced rubber that one can learn a lot from and with.
For weaker beginner strokes, the firm topsheet is pretty forgiving and not very spin sensitive. But when you learn to hit through the topsheet and engage the sponge, there's a lot of capacity to generate spin and speed too.
There's a little bit of a caveat where I feel like medium power shots can be unpredictable, but on the other side that does force one to either commit to full engagement or play soft touch shots.
Lots of tensor rubbers either have a soft topsheet, which can result in loss of control on passive shots and short game, or a harder sponge to match the topsheet, which makes it more difficult to engage properly.
