I cannot sleep if I play TT late (finish after 7-8pm, say). I normally go to bed around 10pm, and often sleep like shit anyway, but playing TT in the evening just ruins my sleep completely.

Any advice on how to handle this? I am sure I am not the only one suffering from this.

EDIT: cue toxic replies from people who do not have sleep problems.

Are you unsatisfied with how you played that day?
Being unsatisfied with your day can keep you awake.

Happens to me when I think about what I can do better, replaying points in my head.

My solution is to be satisfied with what I learned today, write it down in my notes so I can work on it another day.

try taking some magnesium glycinate.

magnesium in general helps relax your body, regulates your hormone, and boosts muscle function and recovery. for this specific case, magnesium can help decrease your stress hormone cortisol and increase melatonin that is related with sleep/wake cycle. I usually can sleep faster than usual and wake up early when I take magnesium before sleeping.

I don't know if you're against taking mineral supplements like this or not, but might worth a try

I did, and may have a gain, a phase when I could not fall asleep after ping pong. It got so bad that I started to only fall asleep using a small dose of "Zopiclone".

Another helpful gadget proved to be the Dodow.
Here directly from Dr.Google: Dodow Sleep Aid Device: A light metronome system (spelled "Dodow") that projects a blue light onto the ceiling to help people fall asleep faster by synchronizing their breathing to the light's rhythm. This device is supported by some doctors and based on the principle of heart coherence.

this one worked so well for me I bought the company 😂

When I trained in China, I was able to maintain a great sleeping schedule. While training in America, my sleep schedule was terrible. Practice in China ended at 4pm at the latest. In America practice might end at 10pm and I am up all night.

I wish there were some sort of simple solution. My only suggestion is to turn professional and train during the day like the other professionals do. :)

On Wednesdays (sometimes, like 1 of 4), I train late from 8 to 10:15pm, I get home at 11pm, sometimes have a beer
Must be a language barrier…. You are confusing “Absolutely 100% always” with…. “Sometimes”.

Let’s not forget the beers in between sets as well! 😂

The problem is, on *weekdays* I can only play after work (and it is the same for the majority of ppl in my club). I can start 5-6pm, but most players come after 7pm (it makes sense. You finish work 5-ish, need to get home, have dinner, then head to the club).

Z-drugs can make you dependant on them for sleep, and most of all, doctors in Canada really do not want to prescribe it. I have tried. At most they prescribe me Orexin antagonists (lemborexant), but those are weak and do not help at all if you are high on TT.

I tried zopiclone before, and it works wonders, but I have not been able to get it in Canada.

I hate it when people see through me!

Well, Wednesdays are hard, tbh you're still kinda merciful...

If i would listen to doctors all the time i would have died long ago 😁 I get prescribed the zopiclone as 7.5mg pills which i brake in half. Done that for months at a time and could then give it up without withdrawal symptoms. I never had to increase the dose to a full pill and if they would be addictive this would have been a sign.

Nope, it is just the adrenaline/cortisol or whatever it is. I do not think about TT in bed at all, just too pumped up after a session, even if it is just training.
Well it is not the cortisol. I am PHP and do not make any cortisol , it would mean that all i had to do was not take the pills and i would sleep.

I got a prescription for Dayvigo several months ago, but even with Dayvigo I could not sleep after an evening of TT.

But I found a cocktail of 3 pills that works for me: 5mg Dayvigo, Magnesium Bisglycinate 200mg, 1mg Melatonin.

You need to develop your own routine that works for You. And you need to keep to it as closely as you can on non-table tennis nights. As to what that routine is, it is a very individualized thing. Some of the above suggestions are excellent, tho I recommend staying away from the chemical ones.

When I was refereeing hockey, I would come home sore as can be with my mind racing a million miles a second. I found that a hot bath (or hot tub) soak relieved both and the physical exhaustion would put me to sleep about as soon as I dried off and got into bed. On the rare occasions it didnt, reading worked within 10 minutes or so. Again, this is Me- you must find what works for You.

It probably makes you overtired and your body is tired but your mind is buzzing and won't sleep. I suffer from this as well but I have no clue how to solve it.
