Edit 3rd March 2026: I have now turned this into a blogpost and will be reviewing more blades in time. To check my 2026 best picks have a look here! https://www.tabletennisequipmenthel...ediate-table-tennis-blades-all-plus-off-minus

Hey everyone! 🏓

I'm putting together a list of the best beginner and low-intermediate all-wood 5‑ply table tennis blades from the most popular brands, and I’d love your help.

I’ve now put together what I know from personal experience and/or what I’ve heard a lot about, but I’m sure I'm missing information. The goal is to create a single overview per brand, something that could really help new players pick their first custom blade or guide those that are ready to upgrade to their second.

Here’s what I have now:
  • I go brand by brand.
  • I list the blades roughly from ALL → ALL+ → OFF-.
  • I know it’s somewhat subjective, but any insights you have around missing items (personal experience, feel, speed, control, etc) will be very valuable

Thank you all for your thoughts and for helping me complete the list! Once the list is completed I will add more details on the wood composition per blade as this is very important and I will also add other details and context to help people choose what their next blade should be 💪

Yinhe:
980 - All +
980XX - All

Dr. NB:
Gladiator - All
Matador Titan - Off - -

Nittaku:
Goriki Danshi - between Def and All+ depending of the applied force.

Here is meassured frequencies of varius blades.

Thanks @belllfador ! Since I'm not familiar with the Yinhe and Dr. NB ones, is it the case that you have personal experience with all of them? And in that case, what could you share on feeling, speed/control, and overall experience?

Also around the Nittaku blades (goriki and danshi), I did read that the danshi is significantly faster than the normal goriki and thus perhaps not in the def/all+ category? Perhaps you can clarify and also if you tried the violin or acoustic before (my fav all wood blades) how goriki feels in contrast to those! I guess it will be harder/stiffer due to the walnut :)

Xiom Diva
Sanwei Echo
Butterfly Mizutani Jun Major
Nittaku Latika
Xuperman Apex
Stiga Energy Wood WRB v2
Stiga Arctic Wood
Thanks @Table10Ice ! I have not tried the Diva, Echo, Stiga energy and Mizutani, how would you describe them and where would they fit with the blades I mentioned? Faster? Slower? In between?

The latika I considered before I bought my acoustic some years ago but was harder and I prefer softer blades, I guess in any case good with tensor rubbers.

And the Xuperman Apex, seems like a limba, spruce, ayous combination, I have never seen anybody with it, any personal experience there?

For the stiga artic in particular, how does it feel compared to VPS? I have never tried a blade with artic wood so that's why I ask :)

cornilleau tarisman
Mizuno Fortius FT
Ah 2 new brands I didn't consider! Great thanks @SwingRobo !

Are there any other Cornilleau or Mizuno blades that you would consider? And any personal thoughts on the experience from the above? :)

When I check it did feel like the fortius could be on the OFF+ side of things?

OSP Origo, Expert II, Virtuoso and Virtuoso+
Thanks @Sedis !! OSP is certainly a brand I have no experience with since in the netherlands I have not met anybody with those blades, but I have now read some articles and people seem to really enjoy them, so perhaps you could share a bit of your experience with the brand and those blades above?

Specially how they compare to other blades from the above list? Thanks again! :)

I had a Virtuoso+ years ago, it was really nice quality, very well made.
I would class it as OFF-.

Thanks @piligrim ! Since I have not tried this one, what can you say about it's feeling, and speed compared to the other Donics in there? Seems to me that it would be a bit faster than the persson powerplay?
I never had person powerplay .. As far as I remember it was a bit slower then Sweden Extra, very comfortable handle and incredible feeling and control. I would add also Waldner Allplay. It a bit faster then Dicon but also very good control. I think this two very good for beginers

I love this blade and it's my favorite 7 ply, many people say Long 3 but I didn't enjoy the handle, feeling was great though, price not so much haha

I didn't add it because it's 7 ply and OFF+ but always good to mention it, thanks @Chang !

PG 7 for sure not OFF+. chinese brands like to write on every blade OFF+ or OFF++. I would say PG7 about OFF- speed
