Hugo Calderano going to play for Saarbrucken next season. I didn’t expect him to back playing league so soon.

Today it has been announced that 13 clubs requested ttbl licenses for the upcoming season, the 12 clubs currently in the league plus the 2nd division leaders TSV Windsbach. Unlike the past season this means the last position in TTBL will get relegated (if every license is granted). In theory the bottom 2 are always relegation spots, but unfortunately due to financial discrepancies between the leagues the 2.BL clubs are often unwilling/able to make the move up.

It looks like this season the relegation battle will be on again though, with ASC Grünwettersbach currently on the hot seat. I hope the club can avoid this fate, Ric's vlogs being reason enough 😁 They've been on a big losing streak recently, with quite some things going against them: Shinozuka not always available when they had a winnable matchup, him and Apolonia performing well on different matchdays, not the same one, Jarvis not with the impact that they've maybe hoped from the mid season transfer, Hippler not proving to be ttbl caliber so far, Walther out for some time and then not reliable yet after slowly coming back from injury, in general a bunch of close 2:3 losses.

What they have going for them is only being 1 win behind 2 clubs that they're still to play (Grenzau, Bad Königshofen), both on away matches however. We're justs 5 matchdays before the end, so this will be a tight ordeal between these clubs.

For Windsbach it's going to be interesting to see their plan for ttbl, currently their best player is Chen Chien-An, but when making the move up they will have to strengthen their squad quite a bit of course. To actually promote they need to hang on to a top 2 position, if they finish in 3rd there will be a playoff vs the bottom ttbl club. To me their league situation looks comfortable enough to straight up make it though, so the danger of relegation in ttbl is getting very real.

Windsbach ended up withdrawing their application to promote to the TTBL and so the league will stay the same for a third season (since Dortmund went up in 2024). Not enough planning time after their unexpectedly great season in 2BL. They held transfer talks but found it almost impossible to still find European players these past few months who were affordable and able to improve the squad enough to take the risk. Not great for the league if the relegation fight doesn't end up mattering more often than not, but probably a wise decision for the club for now. Hope they can manage it planning ahead more for coming years.

I don't think I've heard of a league system where promotion is optional before... But I guess TT is a financially vulnerable sport and protection of clubs is important.
It's normal for this to be optional across sports, in football it's the same that clubs have to request the license of the league they would promote to. Most just obviously do so in any system that's financially healthy, so you might not hear about it. Still happens in some lower football divisions or women's football. For example even a PL club like Wolves didn't apply for promotion for their women's team last year.

If ASC were going to be relegated had Windsbach not pulled out would that mean the players at ASC would be allowed to leave due to relegation and salary will be lower in 2nd division?

Depends on the contracts, but they would've lost some players for sure. Shinozuka is gone anyways, now they announced Chang Tao-Yu, penholder who beat Anton in CL. ASC got really lucky to stay in with this season though, such a big underperformance.

Did you also see Pitchford just signed for Grenzau? Replacement for Mladenovic
