Dignics 09C – Serious Quality Issue NOT STICKY ? Let’s Talk About It.

The D09C I had was only slightly ‘tacky’ / ‘sticky’, it could only lift the ball for a fraction of a second, like many ‘modern’ hybrid rubbers. DHS H3 now has reduced tack or stickiness, bringing it more in line with ‘modern’ hybrids.

’grippy’ rubbers ( non tacky / sticky ) don’t lift a ball at all.

Maybe -

‘tacky’ rubbers lift the ball for a fraction of a second.
’sticky’ rubbers lift and hold the ball for at least a second.

There is definitely some confusion regarding Tacky v Sticky !!

I just did a ball lift test with 3 bats, So maybe …….

Bat 1 - Zyre 03 both sides = GRIPPY - not able to lift the ball.
Bat 2 - Xiom O8H and O8C -
O8H barely lifted the ball = TACKY
O8C lifted the ball for maybe 1/4 of a second = TACKY
Bat 3 - Xiom Tau 2 both sides (old sheets) lifted the ball for maybe 1 second + = STICKY.
Thanks for the detailed breakdown and the tests with different rubbers.

To apply your classification to my case: all my previous D09C sheets were indeed 'Tacky' (lifting the ball briefly).

However, this specific defective sheet behaves exactly like your Bat 1. It is strictly 'Grippy' and cannot lift the ball at all. It feels closer to a standard Dignics 05 than an 09C. This complete lack of tackiness is exactly why I am certain it is a manufacturing defect

i have a simple test to check for tackiness / stickiness.

Use the plastic sheet cover; the non sticky type.

1. Place over the rubber.
2. Flip over the blade
3. If the cover drops, then it is a non-tacky rubber ( e.g. Zyre03 )
4. If the cover does not drop, then it is a tacky or semi-tacky rubber ( e.g. Dignics 09c )

I am very rigorous with my equipment (I always clean it and use protection sheets).

But in this specific case, maintenance isn't the issue. The problem was noticeable straight out of the packaging. The rubber was brand new and sealed, yet it lacked the tackiness immediately upon opening, before I even had a chance to use or clean it.
I'm going to keep an eye out for this for the rubbers I glue. I glue these regularly for others (shop), but I can test the off-cuts to see if they're tacky. We get different batches in Australia, but if Butterfly Japan have made a change to the rubber, it should become obvious everywhere.

Here is a thought:
Once D09C stickiness / tackiness wears off, which it will, not a matter of will but rather instead a matter of when. Therefore, my thinking as follows; once that tack wears off, would not D09C becomes D05 extra hard?

Hence it becomes a buy one get two free rubber proponent, yes? Butterfly, you devil! You are so good...

Yes, we need to double the price.

Yay! D09C arrived and I have just stick that piece on.

First impression, it is heavier, even heavier than Z03 2.7mm.
Secondly, the bounce. It is not so boing-boing compared to Z03.
So, I have to use more proper technique and not rely on lazy half arse stroke.
Sigh… what have I gotten my self into? Me, the masochist.

NB: D09C = no cheat code unlike Z03.

They refuse to acknowledge the defect and only offered me a discount of a few euros on a future order.
This is the japanese way. Never admit to any faults in the system. Keep exposing them and pester them ,when they finally give in, they will come to you bearing gifts, on their knees apologizing profusely 😂
