More bad news for JTTA and the WD pairs that they prefer. There are only 4 SCT in 2027 as opposed to 6 SCT in 2026, so less points available and less room for error.

Took Baba long enough to spell it out.

Is it safe to assume that Ito has warmed up to Hirano again because she got dumped by Hayata (something that Ito has a history of doing) despite being the one to extend the olive branch?

【卓球】ロス五輪に向けダブルス戦略的強化へ 馬場美香強化本部長「ランキング上位の選手同士のペアに組んでもらいダブルスのランキングを高めたい」 ([Table Tennis] Strategic focus on strengthening doubles for the Los Angeles Olympics; Mika Baba, Head of Development, states: "We want to pair top-ranked players together to boost our doubles rankings.")
https://hochi.news/articles/20260912-OHT1T51261.html?page=1

(The Japan Table Tennis Association held a board of directors meeting in Tokyo on the 12th and came up with guidelines for strengthening men's and women's doubles and mixed doubles in preparation for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

At the Los Angeles Olympics, mixed doubles will continue to be played, and men's and women's doubles will also be held for the first time in six Olympics since 2004. Japan, which was listed as a medal candidate, was required to strengthen its strategy going forward in order to defeat China. Mika Baba, head of the Japan Association's Development Headquarters, said, "Our aim is to have players with high rankings form pairings and participate in doubles preliminary rounds or matches that will allow them to be seeded in the event of the main tournament, thereby raising their rankings."

Head of Development Headquarters Baba said, "Starting this year, if we don't narrow it down to a few pairs and raise their rankings within a year, even if they become the national team, our chances of winning a medal will be low. The selection criteria for singles is 1st and 2nd place in the world rankings for both men and women, so I imagine the coaches will basically select pairs from among the players with the highest rankings, acquire seeding rights for the Olympics, and be strategic to avoid facing strong pairs early on."

The events to be held at the Los Angeles Olympics and the number of players to participate are 2 spots each for men's and women's singles, 1 pair each for men's and women's doubles, up to 2 pairs for mixed doubles, and 3 men and 3 men for the new mixed team. 6 events will be held, with up to 3 men and women representing each.)

The issue largely lies with Matsushima; his expansive, high-risk playing style might work for singles, but it doesn't translate well to XD
In reality, Matsushima’s game isn't as well-rounded as Harimoto Tomokazu’s. Watching him play is thrilling—it’s a real spectacle—but he lacks the all-around completeness that Harimoto possesses.
Technically speaking, Matsushima is quite unrefined...

Hirano: Given the current WR, Togami, Shinozuka and Uda will compete for the 3rd singles?

https://rallys.online/topic/international/261010chinasmashharimotomiwacomment/

(Comments from Harimoto Miwa (Kinoshita Group)

── How did the singles match go?

She was very strong again today. It felt like Wang Manyu used her forehand much more frequently than usual. That was different from our previous encounters, which made it very difficult to read her intentions—and her backhand, as always, was formidable. Today, I felt under pressure no matter where I placed the ball.

Usually, if I attacked her forehand side, her game would falter a bit, but today she would finish the point before I could even shift my tactics. She was even winning points during backhand-to-backhand exchanges, which really caught me off guard. I couldn't find an answer until the end, so I feel like I struggled to win many rallies today.

── Do you think having already faced her in the women’s doubles this morning had any impact?

Perhaps. In the doubles match, there were moments where she waited to take balls directed toward the middle with her forehand. In the singles match, too, she would wait for balls aimed at the middle—which she would normally play with her backhand—and finish them with her forehand. So, I do think the doubles match might have had some influence.

── Given that you’ve played each other many times, what was your game plan heading into today’s match?

My main focus was on my receiving. We played twice at the last Asian Games, and both times I struggled with my returns—I couldn't even get into the rallies, or if I did, I couldn't gain an advantage.

I hadn't handled her "hook" (inward-spinning) serves well in the past, but today my returns against them were actually quite good. While part of that might be due to the differences in the table and the ball compared to before, I felt more comfortable today—to the point that, toward the end, she switched to simpler serves directed to the other side of the table. Ironically, while my receiving was strong today, I just couldn't win the rallies. It really reinforced for me that you can’t win unless you have a complete, well-rounded set of skills. Even when I prepare for one specific aspect, a new challenge inevitably emerges—for instance, I might handle the rallies well, but then struggle with my returns. I suspect this cycle will continue.

Playing against Wang Manyu today, I faced more forehand attacks than I’ve ever encountered from her before; that was a valuable discovery.

── Would you say this match served as a stepping stone for the future?

I suppose so. But since the time I beat her in the World Championships team event, Wang Manyu has really shifted into a higher gear—she’s become much more solid.

Looking at her expression, I could tell her mental state was very stable, and she was performing at her full, usual capacity. Honestly, I feel like the gap in our skill levels has actually widened since that match I won.

── You used the "crouching" [tomahawk] serve today—the same one you used in yesterday’s match—and it even earned you a few points.

I was surprised! Yesterday, I used it three times against Wang Yidi and scored on every single one. Since her coaching staff likely watched the footage from yesterday, they would have known I had this serve in my arsenal, so I didn’t expect it to be effective—yet I managed to win the first two points with it, which left me thinking, "Wait, really?"

Of course, she eventually got used to it, and I couldn't keep scoring, but it’s definitely a tactic worth practicing further.

I’ve always found the crouching serve from Romania’s Bernadette Szőcs difficult to handle, and perhaps I managed to create that same feeling for Wang Manyu. If I keep working on it, it could become a genuine tactical option—that was a key discovery for me in this tournament.

── Looking at your overall results—reaching the semifinals in mixed doubles, the final in women’s doubles, and the semifinals in women’s singles—how do you feel about your performance across the board?

In this tournament, I felt that the players ranked above me were steadily pulling further ahead. Even when facing opponents with a similar ranking, I didn’t feel the absolute confidence that I would win while I was playing.

That said, matches aren’t decided solely by raw ability, and I was happy to have reached a level where I could think, "If I deliver my best performance, I might just win."

Although I’m ranked 3rd in the world, I’ve actually lost more often than I’ve won against players at a similar ranking, so in that sense, I’ve often felt that I might not quite be at a "true" world number 3 level yet. Looking at the results from this tournament, while I’ve gained a bit more confidence in my world number 3 ranking, it also really brought home just how large the gap remains between me and the players ranked 1st and 2nd.

The same applies to doubles and mixed doubles. Even when I managed to reach the finals—or even when I was able to take a game off a Chinese pair—I never felt like I was truly in control of the match. Doubles, in particular, presents a mountain of challenges; it’s incredibly difficult because you can’t just rely on yourself. I want to put in solid training for doubles, and for mixed doubles specifically, my main focus is to adapt better to my partner, Matsushima-san, so that he feels comfortable playing alongside me. That’s really the only thing that matters for mixed doubles.

Also, since Matsushima-san is a male player and I’ve never faced him in a singles match, I don’t really know his game in detail. With someone like Hayata-san, for instance, I’ve played against her in singles, so I have some sense of what she might prefer or find comfortable. In mixed doubles, however, there are still many unknowns, so my first priority is to improve my own individual skills for that discipline.

Still, competing in three different events is a lot of fun, and I’m just glad I was able to get through the tournament without any injuries.

── With the Asian Championships and other tournaments coming up soon, could you share a few words about what lies ahead?

First and foremost, I’ll make sure to get plenty of rest and train hard so that I can compete in good health. Having a training period allows me to experiment with different things and refine the quality of the techniques I already possess. However, no matter how much I train, my practice partners often differ in many ways from the players I might face in actual matches. So, my goal is to further develop my skills—to the point where I can compete against players like Wang Manyu—and to challenge myself by facing them in as many matches as possible.

Wang Manyu and Sun Yingsha might not participate in the Asian Championships, but I intend to use that tournament as a target, viewing upcoming events as opportunities for my own growth as I continue to work hard.)

It's reported Ito has removed the description "table tennis player" and all table-tennis related posts from her Instagram.

https://www.tv-tokyo.co.jp/tabletennis/news/2026/10/042672.html

(Ito Mima (Starts)—a gold medalist in mixed doubles at the Tokyo Olympics—has been left off the Japan Table Tennis Association’s women’s national team roster for the second half of the 2026 season, effective October 1.

The selected players are: Miwa Harimoto (Kinoshita Group; world No. 3), Hina Hayata (Nippon Life; world No. 6), Satsuki Odo (Miki House; world No. 13), Hitomi Sato (Nippon Paint Group; world No. 8), Honoka Hashimoto (Denso; world No. 14), Miyu Nagasaki (Kinoshita Group; world No. 18), and Rin Mende (Nippon Life; world No. 88).

Sato, a defensive specialist ("chopper"), has returned to the national team, replacing Ito—who was part of the squad for the first half of the season. Sato recently made history as the first Japanese woman to reach the final of the women’s singles at the WTT China Smash (held October 1–11), where she finished as the runner-up.

This marks Sato’s first return to the national team in three and a half years, since April 2023.

Perhaps most surprising is that Ito’s name does not even appear on the list of national team candidates—a notable omission, given that she held the world No. 25 ranking as of October 11.

When asked for the reason, Ito’s mother, Minori, shared a statement from Mima herself regarding her current mindset:

"As I go about my daily life contemplating the future, I’ve come to realize that I want to step away from the national team and place myself in an environment where I can start with a clean slate. I want to take this time to reflect on myself—not just as a table tennis player, but as an individual—and to explore new possibilities and challenges for the life ahead of me. That is what led to this decision."

Ito, who will turn 26 on the 21st, first burst into the international spotlight as a member of the Japanese national team at the 2015 World Table Tennis Championships in Suzhou. At just 15 years old, she reached the quarterfinals in women’s singles, setting a record as the youngest player ever to achieve such a feat.

She made her Olympic debut at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, where she won a bronze medal in the women’s team event. At the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, she secured a gold medal in mixed doubles—partnering with Jun Mizutani—and a silver medal in the women’s team event.

Furthermore, she won a bronze medal in women’s singles—the first-ever medal for a Japanese woman in that event—marking an extraordinary achievement of securing three medals in a single Olympic Games.

Although she reduced her participation in international tournaments following the Tokyo Olympics, she went on to win a bronze medal in women’s singles at the 2025 World Table Tennis Championships (Individual) in Doha—her first-ever medal in that competition.

She also continued to perform at a high level, contributing to a silver-medal finish for the women’s team as a member of the national squad at the Asian Games this past September.

Given her long list of accomplishments, what path will Ito choose for her future in the sport? We shall wait and see.

(I felt that the dynamic shifted after the last Olympics, when Ito stated that she would decline a spot on the team if it meant only playing in doubles rather than singles. In the past, there were players who, even when not selected for singles in a team event, embraced the role of an experienced mentor offering guidance to younger athletes; it seems, however, that such a role was not what she desired.
Given that there is no longer a place for her on the Japanese national team, it is likely for the best—as she herself has suggested—that she now looks toward what lies ahead.)

(During the recent women’s team event at the Asian Games, she made no secret of the fact that she was keeping her distance from the other players, creating an atmosphere that made it difficult to connect with them. Given that dynamic, I believe it would be better—both for Ito herself and for those around her—if she were no longer part of the national team. As one of the key figures who, alongside Ai Fukuhara and Kasumi Ishikawa, helped build the formidable Japanese women’s table tennis scene we see today, I truly hope she chooses a path that leads to her own personal happiness.)

Reflecting on the moment, she wrote: "We’ve known each other since we were 4 or 5, and ever since then, we’ve pushed one another to improve—both here in Japan and abroad. Catching up on the revision, specifically the removal of "1 by Zennihon Takkyu 2027" for WTTC 2027 to make way for WTT CS Asia 2027.

This marks the 2nd instance after the Road to Paris selection race (in which WTTC 2023 and 2024 players were determined by selection points) where the winner of Zennihon Takkyu will not get a direct entry for WTTC, first for 2028, and now 2027.

Will that be the new norm down the road?

You may want to check out the seeding again, which will be based on the WR on 7/16. Ito blocking Hirano out of QF at Singapore Smash 2024 is starting to hurt. Hirano fending off Ito at Zennihon Takkyu 2024 instead of playing WTT SCT Doha, CT Doha and SCT Goa 2024 is starting to haunt. The selection race should have ended last year. Over-emphasis of Zennihon Takkyu on the part of JTTA shows the rigid and counter-productive nature of the Japanese society.

(Regarding the schedule overlap between the 2027 All-Japan Table Tennis Championships (Open Category) and the WTT Champions event)
https://jtta.or.jp/news/38493

(The 2027 tournament schedule released by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) and WTT reveals a conflict between the WTT Champions event—scheduled to take place in Asia in January 2027—and the 2027 All-Japan Table Tennis Championships (Open Category).
Consequently, players planning to compete in the WTT Champions may be unable to participate in the 2027 All-Japan Table Tennis Championships.

[Details]
On September 1, 2026, the ITTF and WTT published the 2027 WTT tournament schedule on their website. It was discovered that the WTT Champions—typically held in early January—is now scheduled for January 19–24, 2027, coinciding with the All-Japan Table Tennis Championships.
Viewing this scheduling conflict as unacceptable due to its significant impact on the players, the Japan Table Tennis Association (JTTA) immediately and strongly requested that the ITTF and WTT adjust the dates. The JTTA also approached the association in the host nation to discuss a potential change. However, no agreement could be reached, and as of now, the scheduling conflict remains unavoidable. The JTTA also considered rescheduling the All-Japan Table Tennis Championships, but concluded that doing so—with only about 4 months remaining until the event—would be unfeasible, given the implications for the venue, tournament operations, and all involved parties.
The 2 Japanese representatives for the singles and team events at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games will be determined based on the top 2 Japanese players in the ITTF singles world rankings as of the first release in January 2028. Furthermore, the ranking points available at this WTT Champions event are crucial for Japan, as they influence seeding for the mixed team event. A situation that forces players to choose between the All-Japan Table Tennis Championships and the WTT Champions severely diminishes their competitive opportunities. The Japan Table Tennis Association (JTTA) will prioritize safeguarding competitive opportunities for athletes while working to minimize any adverse impact on all involved parties. Furthermore, to ensure that such a situation does not recur from 2028 onwards, the JTTA will strongly urge the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) and World Table Tennis (WTT) to establish a mechanism for ensuring that the scheduling of international events is thoroughly coordinated in advance with the major domestic tournaments held in individual countries and regions.

In her latest interview with Job Antenna, Hirano touched on how rivalry affected unity.

(Why did Hirano Miu choose Kyushu? A new challenge: "Making the chosen environment the right one.")
https://fukuoka.jobantenna.jp/picks/kyushucarina02/

(Discovering a renewed desire to take on a new challenge

— Out of all the teams available, what led you to decide to join Kyushu Carina?

My previous team also provided a wonderful environment, but I reached a point where I was feeling a bit uncertain about my future path.

That was when I reached out to Kawamo-san (representative of Kyushu Carina) for advice. When I told him I was conflicted about what to do next, he listened with such a positive attitude. His words were truly encouraging, and the realization that "maybe I should give it another shot" was what ultimately led to my decision to transfer.

— The phrase "give it another shot" is quite striking. Was this a time when you were reflecting on your career?

Yes, it was. Last year, after the All-Japan Championships, I took a break from international competitions and reduced my overall number of events. While I was focusing primarily on the T.League, a strong desire began to grow within me—a desire to return to the international stage and improve my world ranking.

It was the moment I decided to challenge myself on the global stage once again.

Uncovering new potential through a fresh environment

— Now that you’ve joined Kyushu Carina, what are your impressions of the team?

My teammates are incredibly kind and cheerful; they really lift my spirits.

It’s such a positive team, and I feel like I’m able to train and compete without any unnecessary stress.

— How does this team differ from the ones you’ve been a part of in the past?

In the past, I belonged to powerhouse teams filled with national team players, which meant the environment was extremely competitive. Of course, that kind of competition has its benefits—it helps you grow stronger—but it also meant there was always a sense of rivalry.

At Kyushu Carina, we have different primary training bases and only come together for matches. Because of this, whenever we do gather, there’s a very strong sense of unity—a feeling that "we’re all in this together." Because we haven’t been able to reach the top ranks in the past, there’s a strong, shared ambition among us to get stronger, climb the standings, and eventually become a championship-winning team. Being around the others, I can really feel that drive.

—Has your role within the team changed compared to before?

It has. My previous team had many strong players, so if I happened to lose, there was a part of me that thought, "Someone else will surely step up." Now, however, I’m frequently expected to be the one who secures that crucial point.

There are still moments where I feel the pressure, but I believe that if I can win in those situations, I’ll be able to grow even further.

Figuring out how to manage my mindset when those moments arrive—that’s a challenge I’m currently facing.

On this day, the team participated in a local community event, deepening their ties with the local residents through table tennis.

A day will surely come when you can look back and think, "Making this choice was the right thing to do."

—It sounds like changing teams has also significantly altered your daily training environment.

That’s right. My previous team had a dedicated training base where we would generally practice together. Since transferring to Kyushu Carina, I’ve had to manage my own daily training.

I’m currently based at the National Training Center—the facilities are fantastic—but my coach isn’t always there with me. Previously, my coach would handle everything, from arranging training partners to planning the schedule; now, I have to take care of all of that myself—coordinating with the strength coach, reaching out to training partners, and booking my daily practice sessions.

I knew this would be the case before I transferred, but my biggest concern was whether it might become too much of a burden.

—Even so, what was the reason you chose this environment?

I felt that by taking full responsibility for myself, I could achieve a different kind of growth.

Since I was moving to a completely new environment, I decided to embrace the challenge—including all these extra responsibilities.

I’ve been at it for about three months now, and so far, it’s been a very fulfilling experience.

—After diving into this new environment, have you ever had moments of doubt, wondering, "Did I make the right choice?" At first, I found things a bit challenging, and there were moments when I wondered, "Will this be okay?" or "Did I make the right choice?"

But recently, at the WTT Contender Almaty, I managed to win an international tournament—my first such victory in about three and a half years.

Achieving that result made me realize that perhaps the path I’ve been on wasn’t the wrong one after all.

I was able to stay incredibly focused during my matches, which I think stems from a firm, personal resolve I’ve reached.

Thinking and acting for myself—something gained precisely because my environment has changed.

— Did this recent victory bring a different kind of joy compared to your past wins?

It did. While I’m still fortunate to have the support of many people, in the past, I often achieved results while working with a coach in a very well-resourced environment.

Now, I travel abroad for tournaments on my own, without any accompanying staff, and I play my matches without a dedicated coach in my corner—though sometimes other players step in to assist. I managed to win under these conditions. I also won three consecutive doubles titles, and even in those matches—partnering with Kihara—we didn’t have a coach on the bench.

Navigating challenges on our own to secure a win—I truly believe that this experience is what helps me push through to claim that final, decisive point in a match.

From "away territory" to a place that cheers me on: My connection with Kyushu.

— What was your initial impression of Kyushu?

Actually, I lived in Miyazaki for about 6 months when I was an infant, so I do have a bit of a personal connection to the region.

Previously, I mostly visited Kyushu for "away" matches—playing a game and heading home the same day. But since joining my current team, I’ve had more opportunities to visit places like Fukuoka and Miyazaki. Recently, I even spent nearly a week in Miyazaki for a training camp.

I’ve come to realize once again just how much delicious food there is in Kyushu.

— Is there anything that stands out in particular?

The spiny lobster I had in Miyazaki. The restaurant had a tank, and they prepared a live spiny lobster right there for me. It was so fresh that even when I ate it as sashimi, the edges were still moving—it was incredibly delicious. I also had it grilled and in miso soup; it left a lasting impression.

Having more opportunities to visit Kyushu, I’ve come to realize once again just how much great food there is here, from the seafood to the sushi.

—How do you feel about the support you’ve received from fans and the local community in Kyushu?

At first, I was a bit anxious.

I’m originally from the Kanto region, and most of my fans up until now were also from Kanto, so I wondered if the people in Kyushu would accept me.

But my existing fans still travel from afar to watch my matches, and through participating in events and meeting with our sponsors, I’ve increasingly felt the support of the people here in Kyushu.

I feel it much more strongly now than I did around the time of the season opener. I want to keep working hard so that even more people in Kyushu will support and embrace me.

—Are there any other areas—beyond your sport—that you’d like to explore?

Some fans have told me, "We want to support you, but there aren't many fan club options or merchandise available." In the teams I’ve been part of previously, there were plenty of fan club events.

Right now, things are mostly limited to autograph sessions, so I’d love to see more official events where I can interact with fans, as well as a wider range of merchandise. Currently, we only really have towels—I’d love to see things like *uchiwa* (handheld fans) and other types of cheering gear! (laughs)

I hope that people in Kyushu will come to feel a closer connection to the team and the players.

Turning the chosen environment into the "right" one through one's own efforts.

—What kind of challenges do you personally want to take on moving forward?

First and foremost, I want to secure solid results and points for Kyushu Carina throughout this year.

I also want to improve my world ranking through international tournaments so that I can compete in even bigger events next year. My goal is to climb the rankings at Contender and Star Contender events and, hopefully, win some titles.

—Finally, do you have a message for others who, like you, might be hesitant about taking on the challenge of a new environment?

I believe the environment you choose is incredibly important. So, when you’re feeling conflicted, I think it’s really important to ask yourself, "What kind of environment do I actually want to be in?"

But beyond that, I believe that, ultimately, you yourself are what matters most.

It’s about how you choose to trust the environment you’ve selected and how you go about making that choice the "right" one.

In the end, it really comes down to you—so I hope you’ll give it your all.

[From the Job Antenna Editorial Team]
When stepping into a new environment, it’s certainly not unusual to wonder, "Is this really the right choice?" Even Hirano-san experienced hesitation when leaving her previous environment, and there were moments after her transfer when she questioned whether she had made the right decision. Yet, she chose to change her environment, reflect, and take action. Through this ongoing process, she eventually achieved a significant breakthrough: winning an international tournament.
What struck me most was her remark about "how to trust the environment you’ve chosen and make that choice the right one." Whether you are changing jobs or starting a new career, you don’t always know the "right" answer from the start. In fact, the more you consider moving into a new environment, the stronger the desire to "avoid making a mistake" tends to become. However, listening to Hirano-san, I’ve come to realize that perhaps you don’t need to have all the answers at the moment you make your choice. A step taken amidst uncertainty can, in hindsight, become a decision you look back on and think, "I’m glad I made that choice." Hirano-san’s journey shows us that such a future is entirely possible.)

In an interview with Miguvideo at the start of ATTC 2026, Nakazawa said for WT he had certain expectations for Hashimoto given her performance at WTTC 2026 and Nagasaki who also played at WTTC 2026 and especially her performance against KOR at Asian Games 2026. As for XD, he said Matsushima and Harimoto needed to work on their chemistry more despite their singles abilities.

(Reflecting on the early stages of the match, Hayata noted that she had needed time to adjust to the playing environment—specifically the table and the balls—which caused her to feel a bit more rushed than usual. She also touched upon her plans for upcoming tournaments.

Hayata revealed that although she had initially intended to compete in the WTT Contender Istanbul and the WTT Star Contender Muscat, she decided to withdraw from both events, concluding that the physical toll would be too great.

"As I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to realize that taking time to rest and refresh actually leads to better performance when I return to the table."

Moving forward, she plans to reduce the number of tournaments she enters, focusing instead on training.

"For now, I’m going to give it my all in Frankfurt. After that, I want to take a proper break to reset and rediscover the joy of playing table tennis. Pursuing what you love is challenging, and there are certainly difficult moments—but I believe that’s also what keeps me moving forward."

(Reflecting on the opening exchanges of the match, Hayata remarked, "My start wasn't bad, but my opponent was very skilled, and I also found myself a bit more rushed than usual." Regarding the first game, she added, "Being able to turn things around in the first game was crucial for the entire match. Having the mental fortitude to close out such a game is vital, so I’m glad I managed to win it and take a 1–0 lead."

Following her participation in the 20th Asian Games in September, Hayata has competed in the China Smash and the 29th ITTF-ATTU Asian Table Tennis Championships. As a key member of the national team, she has been navigating a demanding schedule, traveling from one international tournament to the next.

Hayata also revealed that she intends to skip the WTT Contender Istanbul and WTT Star Contender Muscat—events she had previously planned to enter. She shared a shift in her perspective, noting, "While focused training is essential, I’ve come to realize—at my current age—that taking time off to watch movies, go shopping, or visit the beach to take in the scenery is incredibly beneficial for my performance on the table."

Looking ahead, she stated, "My plan is to give it my all through the event in Frankfurt, then take a proper break to reset, so that I can get back to enjoying table tennis."
