Doo Hoi Kem said, "The Netherlands just finished third in the European Championships, and they have a very strong defensive player, which is a style of play that the women's team has been trying to overcome. We've also invited the mainland training team to train with us, hoping to make a final push in the last two weeks, have good training, and then perform well."
Doo Hoi Kem will lead a team comprised of last year's substitutes Ng Wing Lam, Lee Hoi Man, and Kong Tsz Lam, along with 17-year-old Su Tsz Tung. This young player was born in Hong Kong, received table tennis training in Liaoning as a child, and returned to Hong Kong four years ago.

“I will give my all in every match, but I am also approaching the championship with a learning mindset,” the 17-year-old Su Tsz-tung said. “I’ve played against some really good players on the World Table Tennis Tour. I’ll do my best against them.
“This World Championships came sooner than I thought, but I am really happy, and cherish the opportunity.”
Born in Hong Kong to Liaoning parents, Su grew up in northeastern China before returning to the city aged 13. She said she had been “picking up the pace” since starting to play in senior tournaments last year.
“I was born in Hong Kong, so I want to fight for glories with our team,” she said.
Ng was an unused reserve at the 2024 edition in Busan, but said this time expected to play and felt “more responsibility” in her senior role.
“I know I need to stay positive [in front of my teammates] even in difficult times,” the 22-year-old said. “It’s quite a challenging group for us. Dutch veteran Li Jie is a chopper, but we have been preparing specifically for that.”
Hong Kong will be without key player Zhu Chengzhu who helped the city win a bronze medal two years ago, but was diagnosed with a heart problem after returning from the Singapore Smash in February, according to a source who spoke to the South China Morning Post.
The city’s men, meanwhile, have been placed in the same group as Nigeria, South Africa and Saudi Arabia, which head coach Li Ching called “a better draw”.
Veteran Wong Chun-ting will lead a team that includes Baldwin Chan Ho-wah, Lam Siu-hang, Yiu Kwan-to and Kwan Man-ho.
Chan has some unfinished business with the championships after losing a two-game lead against Austria’s Robert Gardos in the pair’s battle to make the round of 16 in the men’s singles.
“It left a lasting impression, and I don’t want to let my teammate and coaches down again,” the 24-year-old said. “The most important would be for me to play to my ability.
“I need to up my game. I need to perform better in key moments and when my opponents try to erase my huge lead. I hope we can reach the quarter-finals at least.”

When asked to assess Nigeria’s group opponents, the France-based Mati expressed confidence but remained wary of the threat posed by Hong Kong.
“Earlier this year, I saw the group fixtures and I’m really confident about our chances,” the Le Havre-based player told Flashscore.
“Hong Kong are a very good side, as well as Saudi Arabia and South Africa. I think Hong Kong will be the most difficult team in the group, but they are beatable.
“I’ve played against a few players from Hong Kong and recorded good victories. With Quadri Aruna, Olajide Omotayo, and youngster Matthew Kuti in our team, the confidence is high.”
On Nigeria’s prospects at the championships and his personal ambitions, the All-Africa Games multiple medallist added,
“We’re not making predictions yet, but we are confident and highly motivated to perform well.
“As a team, I believe we can go as far as anyone can imagine—anything is possible. Individually, I always push myself in every tournament I play.
“For the upcoming World Team Championships, I’m focused on staying positive and giving my best.
“Even though it’s a team event, there are individual ranking points at stake depending on how many matches each player wins. That added motivation pushes everyone to perform at their highest level.”

【Now Sports】
([Now Sports] The 2026 World Table Tennis Team Championships, held in London from April 28th to May 10th, features a new format. Hong Kong team head coach Li Ching believes this increases the difficulty of qualifying and reduces the margin for error. He hopes both the men's and women's teams can leverage experienced players to mentor younger ones and achieve good results. However, Wong Chun Ting hopes that younger players can lead the veterans to victory.
Unlike the previous format where only the top two teams from each group qualified, this year's format divides the teams into 8 seeded groups. All 8 teams are guaranteed a spot in the round of 32. The remaining teams are divided into 14 groups, with the top team from each group qualifying. The 6 best second-placed teams from each group also advance. The remaining teams will compete for the final 4 spots in the round of 32.
Regarding the new format, Li Ching believes it will make it more difficult for the 14 teams to advance: "The new format forces teams to fight for first place, meaning there's almost no room for error. More matches and higher tournament revenue also increase the unpredictability, because even a previously beaten opponent doesn't guarantee a repeat victory." The Hong Kong men's team is in Group 14, alongside Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, and South Africa, while the women's team is in Group 5, with the Netherlands, Macau, and Mexico.
The Hong Kong men's team will field Wong Chun Ting, Chan Ho Wah, Lam Siu Hang, Yiu Kwan To, and Kwan Man Ho, while the women's team will be led by Doo Hoi Kem, Ng Wing Lam, Su Tzu Tung, Kong Tsz Lam, and Lee Hoi Man. Li Ching expressed his hope for a combination of experienced and younger players, but veteran Wong Chun Ting believes that Chan Ho Wah and Yiu Kwan To are young and have potential for further improvement, allowing the focus to shift to them and lay a foundation for the future of the Hong Kong team. Therefore, a younger team leading the older ones is more likely.
Chan Ho Wah will fly to the Czech Republic tonight for the competition and then stay there to train until the World Championships before rejoining the team in London.
Regarding the need to secure first place in the group to avoid trouble under the new format,
Ah Ting said, "The top team in the group advances automatically, but the second-placed team has to compete against teams from other groups and may have to play in playoffs. Our group is acceptable. It's best to avoid mistakes, take it one match at a time, and then strategize after we qualify." Ah Ting believes Nigeria has star players who will be difficult to deal with, Saudi Arabia is also a formidable opponent, while South Africa is a team we've encountered less often. He added that this group requires careful consideration.
As for Doo Hoi Kem, who is leading the women's team, she just returned to Hong Kong from Shanxi at 3 a.m. on Monday and started training this morning.
She revealed that the table tennis team had started planning training more than a month ago after the draw for the World Championships, and the women's team also invited the Shanghai team to practice with them. Regarding whether there is any pressure for the women's team, which was the bronze medalist in the last World Championships,
Doo said: "Our team's strength is unity, drive and mutual support, so we especially like team competitions. There are also more competitions now, and players can grow faster after experiencing competitions and no longer worry about winning or losing. I don't feel any pressure." Regarding the Netherlands in the same group, Doo said that they cannot be ignored because they are the bronze medalists in the European Championships and have Chinese players in their team.)
