Removing glue from rubber before reusing?

Is it required to remove glue from a rubber before reusing?

I've got really fresh rubbers on a blade, but have been gifted a new blade for my birthday and it seems a waste to not just switch them over.

I've had issues in the past removing glue from a rubber, and took plenty of chunks out of the sponge, so really I'd like to know if I can just apply a fresh layer of glue and use them again, to save me loads of bother. Surely everyone who does this can't be spending hours picking and peeling away at the older glue?

yes, if the old layer of glue is still even without bumps, just add 1-2 fresh layers of glue and glue it on the new racket. its no problem at all

Put the rubber in water for >12 hours. The grue will become white and easy to remove. A couple more glue layers can help with the pealing in one go.

Depends which rubber you got. The less dense the sponge is, the more problems you will have as you mentioned, with the glue taking some chunks out. However if it's dense or harder sponge, it won't be an issue. Just make sure you peel it making sure you don't force it from upwards, but more from an angle letting the glue peel itself

Don't bother with those rubbers in your profile, ruining the sponge is very likely.
Sometimes I can remove bumps with patience and a sharp scalpel or tiny scissors. Especially bumps at the edge are easy to just clip off with a pair of scissors.

I was gifted some old tenergies from my coach. he used free chalk 2. It is impossible to remove the glue from the sponge.

I put some mineral oil (baby oil) on the glue side and that made the old glue sticky again.
i did not need to put more glue on the sponge

Thanks for all the replies. @Tyce when you say don't bother, do you mean carefully remove bumps and apply fresh glue, or not to swap them over?

I meant don't bother removing the entire layer of glue
And if you don't remove all the glue, I wanted to give some tips to mitigate the bump issues

One tip for the future is to use a glue like Rev3 that can easily be peeled off even on Tenergy etc.

Two or more decades ago we used speed glue and all amteur players like me had at least 10 layers of glue in each rubber lol Only the really good players (like 1st division players) or crazy people were spending time to remove glue every time..

BUT there is a trick that my coach (who was a very good 1st division player) was doing to remove it and actually works with the current glues, you need to pull the glue on the opposite way that it needs to be removed. For example if you want peel off a sticker you pull towards the way you want to peel it off - imagine you pull the opposite way slowly, consistently and try to keep it parallel and close to the rubber (not pull upwards) The glue doesn't break into pieces, it starts to unglue in an even layer, then you move on to the next cm, pull again towards the opposite side and so on.. it keeps the glue in one layer instead of breaking into pieces.

In any case you don't need to remove it for sure for just one more glue layer! It will be perfectly fine.

Just another fact that I didn't expect - I removed the glue from one rubber last month, after 3 glueing sessions and the glue weight was 5gr.!! It was more than I expected.. so both rubbers after 2-3 glueing sessions are adding ~10 grams to the racket which is considerable weight

Adding a light layer of booster will activate the old rubber and make the old glue sticky again as well.

actually, my experience showed that when using Revo 3 the "peeling" only works smoothly when one has used at least 3 solid layers of glue.
I one has applied the common 2 layers of glue to the rubbers it is best to add another 2 layers before attempting the peeling

Same and I had some quality control issues. One bottle removed easily, but usually I have to work on it a good 40 minutes to get rid of it without tearing off pices of the sponge.

I changed from Revo3 to SUEKE 2 and it works for me. Mostly I use chinese blue sponge rubbers now and they are problem- free

I changed from butterfly glue to dhs 15 as much easier to get the glue off.

Firstly you need to reapply another layer of glue,then before it dry totally,start to tear-out in opposite direction，just like what W3R says.This is the most porpular way in china,which could avoid broking the sponge.

But I dont think reapply one layer of glue and dont stick it again is a good idea.It would make the rubber feels dump and heavy.
