  1. SDC Handmade Blades

Wow, that is a thing of beauty - I hope to produce something 10% as good as that someday xD I'd been meaning to ask this for a while but do you do anything to "seal" or otherwise treat the edges (or even the face...) of your blades before they leave the door? I ask as I'm 20 or so blades "in"...
  2. Carbon weight for blades

Yeah the carbon felt is the other option - might give that a go next. As you say, 90gsm cf is expensive but I’m going to give it a go and see what happens - just need some time now to get building xD
  3. Carbon weight for blades

Yes well this is kind of my point - in reality the forces involved in a shot in table tennis are not going to require F1 level composites - my guess is that even the lightest composite cloth is going to achieve the desired effect (whatever that might be…) and that anything thicker is just going...
  4. Carbon weight for blades

Hi all, I’m 20 or so blades into my building “journey” at this point, the last 10 or so being carbon, ALC and a couple of other fibre attempts. These have been mostly successful - have managed to get a few into the hands of so county and national players for their comments and those have been...
  5. until what age can you play Table Tennis ;-)

Yeah we had a few members that were late 80s / early 90s back when I played as a junior in the 80s. Like above we had two of them pass away at the club. That said, there was a chap who was in his early 40s that had a heart attack and died on the way home from a league match - he was probably the...
  6. Help! Rubber recommendations please...

Just to update this - I’ve had the chance to try a couple of different setups at the club over the last week and a bit. A couple of coaches have recommended Dignics for me (as was mentioned above also!) and I had a decent session with the exact combination I was recommended the most today -...
  7. Help! Rubber recommendations please...

People do like to exaggerate - MX-P lasts a (good!) bit longer than 6 weeks xD The initial boost effect wears quickly but it stays usable for long enough. Granted the newer Butterfly rubber anecdotally lasts a lot longer and as you all say that does tilt the equation somewhat. I’m playing...
  8. Help! Rubber recommendations please...

Zyre03 is approx. 3 times the price of MX-P - the issue I have with this is that MX-P is a known quantity - ie. *I* like it... the Zyre03, I have no idea about and no way to try before buying as no-one at the club is using it as far as I'm aware so it's an expensive gamble. I've potentially got...
  9. Help! Rubber recommendations please...

Zyre03 is £90 a sheet - that's is completely mental however good it is
  10. Help! Rubber recommendations please...

Yep, the longevity of MX-P is its major downside for me - I have never considered Bufferfly anything really as they are super expensive. Of course, there's the consideration that if it lasts twice as long then that's a thing.. but certainly in the past this was not the case. The thought of...
  11. Help! Rubber recommendations please...

Thanks guys - I might see if I can find anyone at the club that has G-1. Otherwise I’ll most likely just end up buying MX-P and maybe switch to EL-S for the forehand as that’s likely a bit spinnier but not as hard as MX-S :) For what it’s worth although most longevity would be nice, I’ve not...
  12. Help! Rubber recommendations please...

Both of those are quite heavy are they not? If I was going Butterfly I’d probably end up with T05 (or T05FX).
  13. Help! Rubber recommendations please...

So, I'm a year and a half or so back playing after a 27 (!) year break from the sport. Previously I was a decentish, county level player back with the old ball, old scoring system etc. using (heavily speed glued...) Mark V (whatever the speed glue version was - GPS or something?) on whatever was...
  14. outerforce alc

I tend to go with 155x148 (or even smaller - have experimented all the way down to 150x146) for my own blades xD Along with a 107mm handle it tends to shift the weight to the correct place for my preferences.
  15. Sanwei 54 ALC - what wood is this?

Yeah I wonder if there's something that the Chinese call "Koto" that is actually something else - I have some "Koto" that was bought from a Chinese seller that looks very similar to that. It's not as hard as the fish scale stuff I have that I know for definite is Koto.
  16. Sanwei 54 ALC - what wood is this?

It could be Koto - I certainly have some that looks similar. I think I can see some of the tell-tale "holes" / pores in that shot of the end of the handle. The "fish scaling" is when it's cut a particular way (quartersawn I'd guess) so it's not always there.
  17. Sealing blade and oiling blade's handle question

I tend to use Danish oil on the ones I've built which is most likely what this refers to although I guess it could be teak or linseed. Either way, an oil finish feels "natural" and shouldn't be overly slick unless they've used 2 tonnes of the stuff xD I've used a (super thin!) layer of poly a...
  18. Foreright's blademaking adventure

Got to try the latest blade with the blue handle out "in anger" today at the club - this thing is fantastic and is definitely my new main blade xD It's incredibly powerful, probably due to the weight, but I'm finding it pretty manageable so far. I installed some Rasanter I had lying around (47...
  19. Foreright's blademaking adventure

Just finishing up another blade which I'll probably end up using myself albeit it's a little on the heavy side but we'll see - seems to be quite nicely balanced so maybe it won't be a complete pig :D I'm actually inclined to just use Hinoki / Cypress outer blades from now on due to the amazing...
  20. Blade with 'rounded wings'

If that's just a blade with the wing bits rounded over then it's pretty trivial to do that to any blade with a bit of sandpaper, no? I used to do that myself back in the day - not so fussy nowadays though on the ones I build myself I do round off the sharp edges in that area.
