Pacifica is in arguably the single best area for TT in the US.
  2. What is your coaches funny coaching tips expressions?

In a match once. I called timeout. Key monent. I was not playing very well. Guy who was coaching me said, "Just take it easy, don't try to hit so hard. Hey Doc, see that chick over there? Damn. You should think about having sex with her. ....... ....... ok. Go play"...
  3. Table tennis vs road cycling and what we know from science

Where do you live? Also you have made an excellent choice of equipment.
  4. Table tennis vs road cycling and what we know from science

Getting back to my original theme, it is hard to compare road cycling to table tennis at a competitive level. For one thing, road cycling at least at higher levels is actually a TEAM sport, whereas TT is individual. A lot of people don't know that. And there are tons of tactical intricacies...
  5. Table tennis vs road cycling and what we know from science

Table tennis is best when you are liberated from mechanics. I'm reminded of something one of the grests said about jazz improvisation (I've forgotten who), "study hard, lesrn everything, then work to forget it". Or something like that. The idea is if you're actually thinking about your...
  6. Table tennis vs road cycling and what we know from science

It is possible to get the EJ virus for cycling and it costs a lot more. Also more little bits to upgrade. The things that actually made me better were things that let me accurately monitor what I was doing. Some of the other expensive stuff probably causes a barely measured effect (at my low...

One I remember that helped me a lot: "You have more time than you think you do"
  8. Table tennis vs road cycling and what we know from science

I've seen coaches, almost always very young (early 20s), straight from China, often at provincial team level or maybe just below that. Often they arrive at 2600+ level. They make a living coaching and winning tournaments (well, winning tournaments for awhile until the constant coaching and...
  9. Table tennis vs road cycling and what we know from science

I did see somewhere that wrist devices that measure racket speed ha e been invented. I imagine those will be helpful. For now, a cell phone video and a tripod are one of the best tech things you can do to improve. To see what you are doing and correlate it with what it feels li,e you are...
  10. Table tennis vs road cycling and what we know from science

As Lula said, amateur players will improve if their fitness improves. Table Tennis is played with the feet as much as the hands. With road cycling i quickly lost some excess weight and of course some muscles in my legs got stronger. Aerobic fitness got a lot stronger. That meant in TT drills...
  11. Table tennis vs road cycling and what we know from science

Fortunately there are many many equipment choices in TT that are appropriate for someone just starting to take it seriously, but the main advice I would give is simply choose ONE, and not worry about it thereafter for quite a long time. Don't be forcing your brain to constantly be having to...
  12. How to measure blade speed?

It is unstated, but there is an implicit assumption that "if only I could find the perfect setup, all my technical flaws would mysteriously vanish".
  13. Table tennis vs road cycling and what we know from science

No kidding? Does he sell his own brand?
  14. Difference between Viscaria, TB ALC, and ZJK ALC?

Definitely no two things made mostly of wood are ever identical. ALC blades in general should not have a lot of vibrations at all, in fact that is the whole thing that gives them their unique feel. It is due to the Vectran (arylate) which as a liquid crystal material has the property of...
  15. Difference between Viscaria, TB ALC, and ZJK ALC?

At one point I think I had about eight of them simultaneously. Looking back, it was absolutely freaking insane. The only thing I can say is that I purchased them over a period of years, tried them once or twice, and then tended to put them in the closet, AND I actually sold them at a profit...
  16. Table tennis vs road cycling and what we know from science

I took up road cycling to get stronger and fitter for TT, liked it a lot, and then the pandemic hit, which for me has meant no TT for close to a year now. And during the last five years as I got more into cycling, and it is interesting to compare the two sports. They are very very different...
  17. Difference between Viscaria, TB ALC, and ZJK ALC?

I had bought or traded for a bunch of them over a period of several years. I sold all but three, which were the ones that felt best to me. The three I kept were all right around 90 grams, two of the three have black tags. The ones I sold were mostly lighter. They were sitting in a closet so I...
  18. Difference between Viscaria, TB ALC, and ZJK ALC?

I agree about OTC also (I've had a few of those too). Again, very similar, ESPECIALLY to the Btfly ZJK ALC blades. Over a couple of years I sold all those extra blades and now I own only three carefully selected Viscarias and hope to never again buy or sell any blades.
  19. Best blade for attackers? ALC or SZLC?

Either. They feel a little different. Both are good. Designed for same type of player. I prefer ALC.
