  1. How does thickness of the table matter?

The table I have is a Sponeta Activeline S6-13i, 22mm thick chipboard surface. Green (Matt) indoor use only table Sponeta make tables for Stiga, Butterfly etc and also have their own brand. German company, During the 1st lockdown, tables basically sold out worldwide for a short period, even...
  2. Editorial: It's hard to know if an equipment change actually makes you better

If you want to evaluate equipment changes and performance, then I think you would have to keep detailed records of your results in match play. All the leagues I’ve played in keep some stats, usually games won and lost usually as a % won. also recent form, ie last 5 matches played 15, W 5 L 10...
  3. Editorial: It's hard to know if an equipment change actually makes you better

Does equipment change make you a better or worse player?? For some players it can make a huge difference!! More so with a ‘major’ change, let’s say from BH inverted to Bh SP. for some it’s good for others it’s bad!! So as a recent re-starter to TT, and having used a reasonably high ( some may...
  4. How does thickness of the table matter?

Tables can deform slightly or warp, this could be caused by an uneven floor, so when the table is set up the legs aren’t adjusted and maybe one leg isn’t tight to the ground. So the table sub-frame (if not robust enough) bends slightly. If this is repeated every time the table is set up then...
  5. the conundrum of buying equipment as a new player

The blade is important, so do pay attention to what kind of blade you choose. It transfers the vibrations from each shot you play to your hand. These vibrations are also transferred to your index finger ( if you use shake hand grip) by the rubber. The blade is the direct extension of your...
  6. the conundrum of buying equipment as a new player

Yes, there’s too much choice !! any videos of you playing? Hard to advise without seeing how you play!! personally I wouldn’t advise T05 if you are only starting out. They are good rubbers, very popular and a ‘go to’ rubber for many, usually more technically sound experienced players. If you...
  7. Ma Long service video analysis (Footwork pattern)

Nice video, The ‘small jump’ planting the left foot down when contacting the ball has a couple of purposes, as discussed it helps transfer the weight forward and means that you can then push back to get into the ready position. Also if it’s ‘stamp’ the noise caused can help to disguise the sound...
  8. Yasaka Rakza Z - Anyone Played with It? Review?

I used it on FH. I found it easy to play with, this was my first thought when I first used it, controlled, speed is enough, spin is good/high, the high arc is there but once you step back from the table and loop, the ball is dragged back onto the table. Kick is not as good as H3. very good for...
  9. Yasaka Rakza Z - Anyone Played with It? Review?

There are always going to be some manufacturing variations!! For example ceramic wall tiles, if you have large areas to tile you must ensure the supplier gets all the tiles from the the same batch, this ensures colour consistency etc. Same with paints.
  10. classic rubbers (sriver, mark v, coppa)

I played with Sriver on BH and tackiness D on FH, my Uncle played with Mark V, but I used to try his set up now and again, from memory Mark V was faster, less control, maybe more spin than Sriver. Never used Coppa. we were not using speed glue either.
  11. what age did you start playing tt

Started when I was 10, played until around 20yrs old, stopped for about 30+ yrs, started again 2yrs ago
  12. Tacky Chinese Rubber on the Backhand?

Not so readily available as we would like !! I bought mine from DHS-729, a company based in Czech Republic, Nat H3 Neo 37 deg orange sponge is about €60 plus tax and shipping. Provincial version is €40 plus tax and shipping. TT11 don’t have the 37 deg versions yet, which is surprising!! As they...
  13. Tacky Chinese Rubber on the Backhand?

Today I revisited my Maze Magic blade with Skyline 3 Provincial BS (FH) and H3 Neo Provincial 37 deg (BH) gave them a clean and was surprised at the amount of tackiness, both held the ball for at least 5 seconds. The rubbers are about (at least) 3 months old, and have not been re-boosted. Still...
  14. Tacky Chinese Rubber on the Backhand?

No, it’s grim to say the least, 41000+ new cases today. My partners been self isolating for 12 days, a couple of cases where she works, so they closed the nursery, she was tested 2 days later, came back negative, but still had to isolate for 10 days from the test date. Which meant she went out...
  15. Tacky Chinese Rubber on the Backhand?

Last training session was good, I was paired with a higher level player, who hasn’t played much for obvious reasons!!! So he was a little rusty!! Did some good routines involving match serves and 3rd ball attack strategies, serving and what type of serve so the opponent puts the return...
  16. Me playing and loosing sindrome

There’s a guy I’ve played a few times, I was chatting to him and he said he was an average club player until another player taught him how to flat hit properly. There’s definitely an art to it !! More so than people think. He is now in the top 5 players in my local (very local) league, and in...
  17. Me playing and loosing sindrome

i found the FH easier, especially when I got right down low, eyes level with the ball, (I was using a bottle that stood about 250mm above our dinning table)
  18. Me playing and loosing sindrome

There’s another exercise that is good for learning to brush the ball, 2 people needed though. 1 player feeds balls by rolling them along the table, fast enough so they run off the end by 150 to 200mm, the other player then has to play a FH brush loop from below the table level !! This means to...
  19. Me playing and loosing sindrome

Spin, and controlled spin, offers so much more variation as well, more options, more for your opponent to think about and deal with!!
  20. Me playing and loosing sindrome

the bottle one is really good!! You can do it on both FH and BH, BH is harder to a certain extent because the ball is slightly obscured by the bat as you strike the ball !! It’s harder to judge, or is for me!!
