  1. Why amateur players should avoid fast gear and where power really comes from in table tennis.

I really enjoyed what you mentioned about Timo Boll and the celluloid ball, it's 100% correct and many people learnt that technique in the past and not struggle to adjust. It's a fantastic nuance to mention that I forgot, thanks @NextLevel !!
  2. Why amateur players should avoid fast gear and where power really comes from in table tennis.

Yes this is what I mentioned to @NetProphet as I agree with his point of view. It is also what @passifid is mentioning. Dave from the club is most of us out there :) It's exactly this what I refer to, I see most people out there, perhaps even 80% of players lost in the EJ jungle, no coach, no...
  3. Why amateur players should avoid fast gear and where power really comes from in table tennis.

I agree this beginners are rare, it requires strict coaching, a certain amount of talent and constant practice. It is possible but not easily reproducible for the target audience of the blogpost, which is 99% of all amateurs out there in the beginner-intermediate phase. I liked the last...
  4. Viscaria (again!)

It will feel very different in your hand though, avoid the dark side of EJ!!! Although to be fair, maybd it works better, Viscaria in the wrong hands is tricky. I know cause I own one and it's now looking totally great on my shelf xD What's your technical level approx? Now I'm curious haha
  5. Viscaria (again!)

I agree with @greenbeanmachine, Falcima is the closest to an all wood Viscaria with koto + kiri, just misses the limba in between and ALC of Viscaria. Hadraw 5 is totally different with the bouncy spruce :)
  6. Should I stop using H3N?

Hola! I have used H3N now for years, and I have tried almost every combination of hardness, booster, sponge color and anything else you can think of, and my advice is that as a beginner, H3N 39 orange sponge (OS) commercial (or provincial if you don't want to gamble on tackiness QA) is...
  7. Why amateur players should avoid fast gear and where power really comes from in table tennis.

I think this is a valid opinion and I enjoy reading things that go into a different direction. I think the truth is never black or white and there is some grey space in between :) For example, young talents with consistent and long term coaching can use much faster and modern equipment from...
  8. Why amateur players should avoid fast gear and where power really comes from in table tennis.

Yes I also agree, this is also what the person below mentioned, and indeed, I'm all up for experimentation, and having fun spending money and time trying things. I think is only when people start being frustrated, blaming equipment and being salty that we should realise there is a problem there :)
  9. Why amateur players should avoid fast gear and where power really comes from in table tennis.

Yes you are absolutely correct from a physics standpoint, and as you say, it's the metaphor that helps people. I have found that the metaphor works because when I teach this, I first show them the feeling of hitting 100, like a good slap in the face so they open the racket angle. They all know...
  10. Why amateur players should avoid fast gear and where power really comes from in table tennis.

I'm glad you enjoyed the content, and that you were also able of recognising, hey, this is not the right setup now, maybe later :) Your new setup sounds good, still fast with that koto 301 and hurricane if boosted a lot but overall should be much more controllable (and I dare saying, spinny) :D
  11. Why amateur players should avoid fast gear and where power really comes from in table tennis.

Thanks! Yes it is, there is a part of not really getting it, another part of your own ego telling you 'I can handle this' (we have all been there), then plenty of people who want you to buy expensive stuff (shops, brands, influencers, etc) and when you have time and money, you want the shiny...
  12. Why amateur players should avoid fast gear and where power really comes from in table tennis.

Hey all, I'm just new to the forum even though I have been checking information and following Dan and co for a long time, just lurking in the shadows and learning :) After playing table tennis now for about 8+ years and being the amateur (beginners, intermediates) coach of our club for around...
