  1. Daily Table Tennis Chit Chat

Well, most men in the US are fairly complacent in their marriages, and the divorce rate is astounding. Many couples report unhappiness. Same thing here in Finland: it's uncommon to not be divorced once or twice by the time you're 50. I can't help but feel something's up, you know. Although it...

@OldschoolPenholder I've seen you post twice that you cancelled something at the last minute to go and do something with your wife. Although I acknowledge you're older and evidently wiser than I am, I'd still like to remind you that falling into the trap of complacency never makes anyone happy...
  3. How to play against flat hitters.

Hah, Carl. I discovered the shot months ago on my backhand side when I was screwing around, but wasn't too sure if it was an actual thing because the quality was relatively low. Then maybe due to a cognitive bias, I started hearing of "backspin flicks". Now I saw it again and was just curious...
  4. How to play against flat hitters.

So basically a downwards punch from a cocked wrist starting position? I assume the spin potential is not that high and it's for deception. Am I wrong?
  5. How to play against flat hitters.

Somewhat offtopic, but how exactly does one perform a quality backspin flick? Can it be done from the forehand side? I can see it being done by either brushing down before the whip, or more likely brushing down after the whip, with the hand moving down at the end. Although I'm probably missing...

So, I got a haircut. Why the hell does anyone care, and what does it have to do with table tennis? I don't have to deal with hair in my vision during cross-steps or aggressive looping. Pretty sure my level has improved slightly due to that. ;)

I think Shuki is associating whip mechanics too much with looping. You can have whip mechanics in looping, driving, countering, pushing, blocking, serving, you name it. I've never seen nor heard of anyone who is over the low 1000's who doesn't have some kind of whip mechanics in their game. I...
  8. How to play against flat hitters.

Der's post really shows how complex the game can be even at a "relatively low level" compared to what's possible, and just how many options there's available! Just gotta realize them. OP can probably do all of those.
  9. How to play against flat hitters.

I have no idea how good you or them really are, and you're probably much better than I am, so don't be surprised if it just gives them easier balls to hit. But if you haven't tried it, why not try it?
  10. How to play against flat hitters.

Well, you know what to do. I'm not entirely sure what downsides it would have, but perhaps for the time being, step a little back from the table more than normal and try to force them to play your style of game? Step back slightly on the serve return to loop long serves a bit later, and push...
  11. How to play against flat hitters.

Do you think your stroke has something to do with it, or are you too high and your footwork is not fast enough? If you accurately know what's the problem, I think you can fix it.
  12. How to play against flat hitters.

The people I play with are used to me looping everything nowadays. Usually pretty slow, to train the touch. You should have seen the look on the face of my opponent when I looped the 3rd ball slow and heavy, then just slapped their block right into their backhand court because it was a tad bit...
  13. How to play against flat hitters.

Where do you stand? Forehand side? Backhand side? Where do they return it on your side? Forehand, backhand? Long on the table or short on the table? Wide over the sideline? Into your elbow? It sounds like you're not ready, if you return it as a high ball. Is your stroke too long?
  14. How to play against flat hitters.

When they flat hit it after your attack, what exactly happens? Where does the ball go, where are you, and what stroke did you play? Are you set and ready before they hit their stroke?
  15. How to play against flat hitters.

If you have a 70% win rate, let me ask you this: What is happening when you win against them? What are you doing and what are they doing?
  16. How to play against flat hitters.

Sakumi, if they're legitimately good players who have a mean loop but choose to flat-hit, then they're simply better than you. Perhaps by quite a long shot. They're probably playing the flat-hit style to counter the loopers, and it seems to be working on you at least. What is the difference...
  17. How to play against flat hitters.

Why are you flicking to them? You're giving them a relatively fast ball without the massive spin that a loop has. Why not set up your 5th ball with short game, setting up a shot that you can loop?
  18. How to play against flat hitters.

Are they good basement players, or are they very solid short pips hitters? There's a huge difference. They could just be better than you, by the way you described it.
  19. Are these fake rubbers?

I'm pretty sure that if I can spin with apparently terrible 729 Super FX, then someone who really does have the right impact can probably spin with an ice block, let alone a legit rubber.
