The best way to read anyone's serve! As I understand, ITTF has not banned them yet, so the sky is the limit!

Vince, I take it this will be your first local league match? The key is to try staying calm and relaxed and enjoy the experience. In the end, it is just the first match of the many more to come. Play the game you're comfortable playing, and don't experiment :-) Ask your teammates about the...

Ma Lin's RPB "imitation" is hilarious :-)

Thanks! WLQ is a true legend.

Depends on how far are you willing to travel. There is a Central London League with lots of clubs. https://sites.google.com/site/centrallondonttleague/home/where_to_play You can also use the ETTA club search site: http://spotlight.etta.co.uk/venues/in-london/10-miles/type-table-tennis-club

Doubled my rankings in two different leagues as compared to 2012, twice beat a player ranked inside top 200 in UK.

I'd love a job that requires me to shadow Gao Ning, and remind him that he'd not allowed to sneak out for a quickie in the Chinese league :-). I might even learn something from him :-)

I'm beginning to regret wasting my time on reading the ETTU handbook as well :-)

Read the league handbook - the section on "marketing regulation" - read "money" - comes first. That's why the league wants to enforce that matches happen when scheduled, and also does not want to police the issue itself, hence the above player participation rule - making it the club's...

Probably to ensure that teams participating in ECL do not have problems finding players to play matches due to other commitments. It does seem restrictive, but then all players have to sign and have their signatures notarized, so it is very surprising that Gao Ning did play in another league...

Yup. From article J.4.2 in the ETTU Handbook (http://www.ettu.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/2013-MAY-22-J-ECL-MEN.pdf): Together with the entry form, a club shall submit, separately for each one of its nominated players, a player registration form provided by the ETTU. This registration...

Let us know how you get on. You can also try a bit of extra variation - pretend you're doing your normal top spin serve, but put as little top spin as possible. In other words, defenders hate variation - if you can make your serves/shots look similar but have different amounts of spin on them...

She's a great tactician, and so gracious during play. I'd rather watch a "best 1000 shots by LXX" video than any football match in the history of the sport :-)

@VinceG: Does your friend ever initiate an attack himself? Or is he content to just keep the ball on the table, letting you do all the hard work (and mistakes)? In the latter case, try using simple serves. Sometimes just alternating between simple short and long no-spin serves can be quite...

You forgot to add a caveat: -partially works if you're ranked in top 5 on Earth (otherwise forget it).

While we're on the subject, how about adding a "verified spammer" thing? Someone whose username is a RUSSIAN/UKRAINIAN name in all caps, claims to come from Austria, and posts links to stolen videos from other YT channels without any attribution would be a first honorary member.

Timo Boll is inviting Wang Liqin, Ma Lin and Chen Qi to join him and his club in the German bundesliga! http://tabletennista.com/2013/12/timo-boll-invites-ma-lin-wang-liqin-to-the/ That could improve competition in Europe :-)

Nice videos. Visiting team were mostly penholders?

Cannot wait for a BTY "Pitchford" blade - will be a hit!

A very good win for Liam! Still, Gacina is #32 and Pitchford #54, and this is the first time they played. Let's see what the long term trend is against a larger sample of players first before declaring who's the better player. I still stand by my previous comment. Imagine if Liam was built like...
