HKG stuck with the original lineups as well (with Minnie Soo being replaced by Lam Yee Lok due to her condition), and like TPE, those are the best lineups they could've fielded at the time before the entry deadline for Asian Games 2022. Kao Cheng-Jui didn't start to shine until WTT CT Lima in August, which was too late.

Not the case for JPN and KOR at the time. Without LJH and SYB, the men's and women's teams would've been much weaker. South Korea was wise to redo the selections. At the end of the day, people don't care about fairness when you don't bring home the medals that you could have.

As a TT fan, who don't look at selection policy,

This is my TPE team
Lin, Chuang, Kao, Huang, Feng, with Liao as reserve
Cheng, Chen, Li, Chien, Huang Yu Wen with Liu and Huang I-Hwa as reserve

There is a problem with "internal" matches vs "international" matches.
Some players since junior age group, have always shown better results against foreigners than oppose to domestic competition.
Hence to me, there isn't a big enough weight on international performance.
But when the organization is based on democratic decision making, and everything is black and white, it is difficult to have grey areas. Else it becomes ugly like "favoritism" in selection.

I would have put Harimoto or Hirano in position 1 and Hayata in position 3.
Japan always goes with the obvious lineup which leaves their players as sitting ducks against a well-prepared chinese opposition.
Harimoto won't be able to get 2 points
maybe in a few years time.

putting Hayata in 3 would likely get fan backlash too and at 3, won't even guarantee a point....
So no matter how you put the team roster, it will require Chinese players to give away the points.
HT winning 2 last year was really super special and I think it will be a while when we see what Singapore did (LSW gave away the points then)

Yes yes yes. The first and third eapecially, the second is just reinforcement for bad days.
To expand on #3, there is an interview with Saive where he discusses how much tactical knowledge China collected on him. He talks about one match where the coach was unavailable and he got a lead and when the coach showed up, his opponent made a comeback. Knowing where your opponent likes to put the ball, what they typically serve at key points etc. can be a massive cheat code. It is hard to violate being yourself. Especially when you have been studied over long periods of time. Very few countries can invest that kind of time into deeply knowing the opponents. Basically the top ones.
