Kanak also barely got past Lorenzo in match 1 who played him closely at the Pan Ams last year. I suspect the Argentinians pride themselves and put a little more specific preparation into the Pan Am events than the USA team does.
Kanak often beats Cifuentes with surprising (to me) ease, maybe the location made a difference. I suspect something about the tables/balls/altitude is playing favorable to the Argentineans and not so much to Kanak.

ITTF-Americas Championships Lima 2026 (Americas Table Tennis Championships) is an annual table tennis tournament for countries across North and South America. The tournament will be organised by the Federación Deportiva Peruana de Tenis de Mesa (Peruvian Table Tennis Federation, the official governing body for table tennis in Peru) under the auspices of ITTF Americas (the Pan American Table Tennis Confederation). The championships will take place in Lima, Peru, from 18 to 25 October 2026.
Seven events are scheduled: men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles, men's and women's team events, and mixed doubles.

Qualification for the Tournament

The 2026 ITTF Americas Table Tennis Championships feature players and national teams representing table tennis associations from North, Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean.
Player eligibility for singles and doubles events is governed by ITTF regulations 3.8 and 4.1.3, while eligibility for team events is governed by regulation 4.5.1.
Each national association, including the host association, may enter:
  • One men's team and one women's team, each consisting of 3 to 4 players.
  • Up to four players of each gender in the singles events.
  • One pair each in men's and women's doubles.
  • Up to two pairs in mixed doubles.
In doubles events, both players must represent the same national association.
The ITTF World Rankings are used for the draw and seeding. Singles seeding is based on the rankings for Week 42 of 2026 (12 October), while team seeding is based on the October 2026 ITTF Team World Rankings.
In doubles events, seeding is determined by the sum of both players' ranking positions in the relevant individual doubles rankings published by the ITTF. Unranked players are assigned a notional position immediately below the lowest-ranked player. In the event of equal combined rankings, additional criteria specified in the competition regulations apply.

Playing Format

The 2026 ITTF Americas Table Tennis Championships are held in accordance with the rules of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) and international competition regulations.
Seven sets of medals are awarded across men's and women's team events, men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles, and mixed doubles.

Team Events
The men's and women's team competitions are played under the Swaythling System.
Each national association may enter one men's team and one women's team. Each team must consist of at least three and no more than four players.
Each team match is played until one team wins three individual matches. The order of play is:
  1. A–X
  2. B–Y
  3. C–Z
  4. A–Y
  5. B–X.
Each individual match is played as best of five games (first to win three games).
The competition consists of a single-elimination knockout stage, with no preliminary group stage.
Teams are seeded according to the October 2026 ITTF Team World Rankings.

Doubles Events
Men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles are played in a single-elimination knockout format.
All matches are played as best of five games (first to win three games).
Both players in a pair must represent the same national association. Each association, including the host association, may enter one pair in men's doubles, one pair in women's doubles and up to two pairs in mixed doubles.
Seeding is based on the sum of the players' ranking positions in the relevant ITTF individual doubles rankings. In the event of a tie, the doubles pair rankings, the previous week's rankings and other criteria specified in the regulations are taken into account.

Singles Events
Men's and women's singles are contested in a single-elimination knockout format.
Each national association, including the host association, may enter up to four players of each gender.
All matches are played as best of seven games (first to win four games).
Players are seeded according to the ITTF World Rankings for Week 42 of 2026 (12 October).
Final positions from 9th to 16th among players eliminated in the Round of 16 are determined by their positions in the ITTF World Rankings for Week 42 of 2026.

Qualification for the 2027 World Championships
The 2026 Americas Championships serve as a qualification event for the 2027 World Table Tennis Championships Finals, to be held in Astana, Kazakhstan.
Under the ITTF qualification system, the Americas have been allocated the following continental quotas:
  • Men's singles — 11 places.
  • Women's singles — 12 places.
  • Men's doubles — 6 pairs.
  • Women's doubles — 8 pairs.
  • Mixed doubles — 9 pairs.
The number of quota places is determined by a dynamic ITTF formula that takes into account players' World Ranking results, national association activity and continental representation. The ITTF World Rankings for Week 35 of 2026 are used for the calculation.
These quotas represent the maximum possible number of places for the continent and do not guarantee automatic qualification for the corresponding number of participants. Final allocation is subject to ITTF qualification regulations and player eligibility.
In singles events, a limit of three players per national association applies, with additional places potentially available for associations with players ranked in the world's top 100 and top 50.
The championships also form part of the qualification pathway for the 2027 Table Tennis Doubles World Cup and the 2027 Pan American Games in Lima.
