I am coming back to the game after 20+ years of not playing and unfortunately live in an area where there are few players.(West Texas) When I was playing I was Mid 1800's but after so long away and older and fatter? The nearest club is 90 miles away is only open 3 days a week and only for 3 hours. I cannot drive that distance every time I wish to practice so I am looking at buying a robot. I realize that practicing with a robot is different than playing with a person but I need more repetition than a couple of days a week. I really need some advice on which robots are worth getting.
The 3 models available that interest me are the Paddle palace S4W pro,Butterfly Amicus, and the Oukei TW 2700-S9.
Any information would be welcome.

Hello Gene, welcome back to the sport. :)
I'm a returner as well, after taking a 17year break.
Now to your question:
Well our club owns the Amicus Advance since about 7 months, and everyone is really satisfied so far.
You can program it from beginner drills up to semi-/professional drills. From serve receive to Falkenberg, it does all of it, and really does it great. Nothing broke or needed to be replaced.
In fact we first had a little difficulties calling up the already pre-programmed drills, but the guy at Butterfly was really helpful and patient.
The robot works with cell balls as well as with poly balls, but keep in mind to 'wash' off the factory dust of brandnew cellballs before using them, otherwise the dust on them makes the balls get stuck. We mostly use the Butterfly Easy Balls (which are pretty good P-Balls for practice), so no ball-washing was recquired. They actually even gave us on top a Box of 120 balls extra for free.

I cannot speak about the other robots you've mentioned since I haven't tried them. (I actually don't know anyone who owns more than one robot at the same time)
;)
Hope this can help a little.

Thank you Suga D for the information as it is a great help. I will follow your advice on cleaning off the factory dust. I was in Frankfurt 1983-1984 and I miss those days of being able to practice my tischtennis game at one of the local clubs. There were so many good players from novice to Bundesliga and my game really improved. I miss the nightlife as well. Thanks again for the information.

That's a nice coincidence. I stay about 20 minutes from Frankfurt and started playing TT around 1983/1984.
May I ask at which club you have played?

I totally agree, this area has many good players on all kind of levels.
I also still love the nightlife here, but i always thought it must be rather small for someone from the states. Well thanks for your acknowledgement.
;)
One of my best friends moved from Frankfurt first to Pasadena and now is since a couple of years in Houston. He used to play quite good, but doesn't have a lot of time to play nowadays, but whenever you're in the Houston area and he has time, i'm sure he'd be happy to have someone to play with. He used to play at a club (i think it's the Houston TT Club) but lately he mostly plays at the chinese community center.
But there's another member on this forum, who is also from Houston, and is also moderator on another forum and is always very helpful.
He might be able to help you find a club in your area.
@Baal: i hope you read this. ;)

Hey Raj, it's a little off-topic, but if Gene doesn't mind i can say a word or two.
Those are two completely different rubbers.
The Spin Art plays a bit like a hybrid chinese/japanese (a bit like a few JUIC Rubbers used to feel, that use the Globe999 topsheet on a japanese sponge), and it uses also the springe sponge (like T05), but it doesn't feel 'springy' at all, due to the semi-tacky topsheet, which is absolutely non-bouncy.
But the beautiful (spring-)sponge allows you to keep up the pace in mid-distance loop-to-loop rallies.
As Gene already mentioned, you can find my review here on the forum.

Raja he has a review of the Spin art posted. It is good info. Search "Spin Art"

Thanks again for the kind words.
:)
Nice to get this appreciation.
Hope you can get all the Info you're looking for.
I think there are two or three forum members who also use (or have used) an Amicus robot.

But I find it's quite expensive for privat use, but on the other hand there's a german phrase that says:
He who buys cheap, often buys twice. Meaning if you save on spendings (and many times also on quality) you most of the times have to buy a new one after a short while, 'cause 'it' (whatever 'it' is) already broke.

And that's exactly what I like about the Amicus. You can have fun with it for a good amount of time, since you can use it for easy drills as well as for more complicated ones. And another thing, you can program up to six different 'types' of balls, starting from a serve or a heavy side-/topspin ball and you can simulate almost a 'real rally, 'cause not very many rallies nowadays are much longer than 6 balls, besides 6 programmed robot balls plus 6 answering balls of you would actually add up to a 12 Ball rally. (Pls someone correct me if I'm wrong)
So all in all I find the Amicus is totally worth its price.
But maybe someone can say something about the other two robots you've mentioned. That would be interesting to me as well.

I played at Club Eintracht Frankfurt. I think it was Thursday nights that I took the UBahn to downtown to play but I can't remember which night for certain. I spent most of my time getting coaching, as my game which up to that time I had thought rather good was really rather poor in comparison to the players there. I was using the Seemiller grip at the time and I just didn't have a backhand. They "strongly" advised me to change to a more conventional grip so I did. I was the only American there at that time and I met some really nice people in the club. I spent most of my time playing against the younger players as their game and mine were more equal. They always seemed to want to play for a Viertelpfunder mit kase and I was glad to pay up in return for the playing experience. We would go to McDonalds after practice. As to the night life there I came from a city with a population of 110k which didn't have a night life or table tennis so the whole Frankfurt experience was super. Pasadena is about 896 kilometers from where I live but my girlfriend and I visit Houston once in a while as she has friends that live there.

Midland... ah man, you got it almost as bad as I had it when I live in Oklahoma, 2 hrs drive to OKC and 3 hrs drive to Dalls to do anything. Too long a drive to do much except tourneys... and you never really grow a lot doing only a tourney every 3-4 months.

Other than when I was in the military and stationed in the Seattle area and then Frankfurt I have had to drive a long distance if I wanted to play in tournaments similar to you in Oklahoma. Now that I am retired I have plans to go to more tournaments but the drive will still be a pain. I just wont have to worry about driving back home and being at work the next morning :)

Grats on making it 30 yrs in military. That is a long time. I know I couldn't have made it that long. No way my knees would have taken humping a ruck that long. Out of the first company I was in at Ft.Lewis only four made it to retirement and they didn't make it 30 years. I was in 4 years then got out and went back to school. I just retired at the end of February after 30 years with U.P.S. This area is so much cheaper than D.C. area even after our last oil boom which raised housing costs by 50%. Even Baltimore is half again what we pay per square foot for a house. The trade off is there is limited entertainment.

Middle picture. First guy in shorts on the left with a beard. I don't recognize any of the others. If it is the same guy he used to train on some of the same nights I was in there. Nice guy, used to help the kids a lot with drills and would give me pointers. I cannot remember his name. 32 years ago I should remember.....:p Never played a game against him but he was a strong mid range looper. Anything I hit at him he could throw back at me with strong spin and he could slow it down or speed it up. I didn't challenge him at all unless I happened to get lucky and that was probably when I happened to surprise him with an ok shot after sucking the rest of the time. When he would bear down I couldn't handle more than a couple of exchanges in a row before he put it away.

If you are a bit of a DIY man you can make a better one for fraction of the price.
I think it's worth giving it a try with some parts from ebay. And I think personally it's better to have a robot than it's to practice with random people, especially if the really good players are always taken. Plus the beauty is you can practice something any time you want.

Too little, too late... he´s already got it.
But still great info, though. I think this could be helpful for guys like archosaurus who don't seem to have many good practice partners...

Thanks 4 sharin´
