Haha, this thread cracks me up about the real-life contrasts that are indeed real.

In real life, I am mellow enough and under-rate myself, yet in the arena, I am all tiger aggressive, especially when I am cheering my team, just ask the ones in the huge center today at Capitol Area Super League. I think the residents 20 km away heard (and felt - evidenced by NGA detecting seismic activity) that there was an important TT league matchup going on nearby.

It could be other personality traits causing them to play the way they do too. Not just an aggressive person playing aggressive.

Imagine a psychologist or a shrink for instance. They could be a player who tries to find someones weakness, they could be the type of player that is a data collector the first game, learning everything they can about their patient (I mean opponent) and then playing against their weaknesses.

Or the kind of person who is much more calculated in life. They would surely choose a play style that would statistically give them a better chance at being good. They may think, well if I'm going to get good at this game I should probably be an aggressive player that loops from both wings. If the ball goes in an arch motion then It's more likely to hit the table, and most top players are aggressive so that seems to be the way to play the game.

In these situations it has nothing to do with aggression vs a passive personality as much as how they view things.

Hey Der, maybe TT is for you a way of revealing the dark side of your personality?

Hey Cornell, that is a good one. Picture says MORE than the proverbial Thousand words.

However, I do not think I am entirely just like that in the match. Der_Echte DOES play at a significantly higher level than his warm-up strokes or friendly club match level though. Yet, it is when I CHEER anyone on my team vs an "enemy" team (who are actually also my friends) that you see the "Eye of the Tiger" in me.

In a real macth, depending on my confidence, the ball, or my determination to attack first, I might play like BOTH in hte same game... MANY times. Still, overall, I do up the level and intensity considerably in a sanctioned match or in Super League. Yeah, we are a Div 2 team (Div 1 teams have 2500s players and a pro or two) but we got new uniforms that are FIRST CLASS.

I will make another thread to shamelessly promote that aspect and get half the forum go full Darth Vader against me :D

hmm, great question. :)

I vote that personality got a hand on responses / choices a player made when facing certain situation, and play style is compilation of that responses, so :)

I vote that personality "indirectly" linked to play style. :)

e.g.,

I choose to be a chopper not because I am patient. I am anything but patient. :)

I love to see the agony in opponent face while I play propylaxis style (for those who play chess, think Petrosian style), learning opponent strength and weakness, neutralize his strength before even being used, mixing between loaded and empty chops, deliberately avoiding giving attackable balls, enticing opponent to make mistakes. :)

Good thread :)
I think playstyles are indeed linked with personalitys, sometimes more sometimes less.
Tabletennis migth bring out your true feelings. So everyone thinks of you as an calm individual but inside your are raging :D
Different thought: A good friend of mine who is quick-witted with words can play a very good return and block game, with alot of different spins, speeds and placements.
