Exactly !! I can't still figure out why somebody who is quite good and can hit such an awesome around the net keeps on doing the same return on the same serve ? Any thoughts ?

It took him the whole match (until the second last point) to realize that all he need to do is to step to the left and strike a top spin to counter that lefty backhand side spin serve. I suppose he is just inexperience against lefty + he didn't understand the mechanism of the side spins especially from a lefty serve.

Lefty backspin serves are easiest for righties because the side-topspin loop is a counter to the spin.

There is also the grip and service motion to consider. Maybe Dan's opponent had never seen this kind of serve before.

Do NOT under-sell Dan by any means. Dan is a former 5 time US national champion Yes, FIVE time champion) back when we had a few players in the top WR 50.
