?k lets be realistic, its a fact that the chinese are very very strict but this video is going to the extreme. Especially in the part that the olympic diver was not informed about her mother's cancer issue, which was her father's decision not from the chinese federation or something.

Now for the gymnastics, the training is harsh and extreme in every country. I can guarantee that from a personal experience in greece.

We trained a lot in the same hall with gymnasts (little girls mostly 7-10 year olds) and all this barbaric stretching is part of their routine. We would hear screams of pain every now and then, so basically the question should be whether is it worth it to be a gymnast when the competition is so harsh

Of course the coach who kicks that kid at the beginning needs a hard spank Im not defending their methods. ZJK's father used to hit him with a plastic stool to punish him. Also, Boll said in his book that in a conversation with ma lin he said to him that the longest vacation he had in his olympic year was 2 days and boll pointed out (not to malin, but to the readers) that he would never sacrifice his happy way of living and enjoying TT and life in general just to practice hard and win an olympic medal. So I'll drink tothat

To achieve great things, you gotta give up something. Sports is a harsh profession. Though I agree with ttmonster of the acrid process used by coaches on small children.

Interesting...in table tennis the gap between chinese and others is big but not that big. They have ML XX FZD FB ZJK, but the others are beatable by top non chinese players (and ZJK). Boll said that he would never practice that much and he is (was) comparable to the Big4 (or nowadays Big5, FB deserve it). I think this brutish training hurt them mentally. Modernization reach even them and they will realize that being a LITTLE less strict (more vacation etc... not in technique) will help their players.

I remember reading somewhere that Wang Hao and Zhang Jike would not want their children to play table tennis. I thought that was strange at the time but now it makes me curious. If there were some book on Chinese table tennis history or a top CNT player's memoir I think I would find it absolutely fascinating.

People achieve incredible heights of athletic success witnout being subjected to that. I agree though, gymnastics is a special case.
