Yeah, I think this was a fantastic shot, Gao was apologising from the luck as it wasn't intended. It is phenomenal spin and I have never seen anything like this before from a backhand flick!

Hmm - did not look like a mishit to me. Just a ridiculously good backhand flip ... or maybe we should call it a "wrist loop". Crazy topspin!

Agree, looks to me like he did it on purpose, but of course he did not know that it would be that good. Maybe just apologized for his awesomeness.

it looks a bit like it hit the edge of the net though?

i've imported the footage into premiere to check closer fpf. i think it hits the edge giving it a new and weird trajectory. thats why ning is apologizing as well i think.

You may achieve that similar shot if you hit the ball near the edge of paddle. This is the portion where you can generate more spin but the impact for is lesser.

I believe it is possible to produce on poly because of bigger size and more drag and friction of surface. You can notice how poly ball drop faster during fh to fh rally when putting more spin on it.
