I know what some of the Hong Kong players gets paid (including Olympians), many of them cannot rely on such "grant" and the moment the players stop playing or results drops, the "grant" will stop too, aka it is tied to active athlete only + performance.
and honestly speaking, some of those amounts are not even great.
for those that are not familiar with the HK system, here is the information
Information:
"The size of an athlete’s grant is determined by their performance in international competitions. For example, an athlete who finished between fourth and eighth in the Olympics will receive HK$32,730 per month (US$4206).
Those who have qualified for the Olympics but do not rank in the top two-thirds at the Games receive HK$11,520 per month (US$1480).
The entry-level HK$7,130 (US$916) grant is given to athletes of the “senior squad,” which requires them to place in the top two-thirds at international senior competitions of their respective sport."
I would say even the HK$11,520 is way too low, but maybe some, this is a well paid amount.
and for you to "continue" to receive the grant as an active athlete, you need to be eligible based on annual or biannual reviews.
What this means is if you fall too much in the world rankings, you would either loose your tier payment and drop to lower tiers..... and this is why, so many of them, while injured, need to continue to fight for world ranking points. Because it affects what they can earn from the government.
and that is the reason why a number of HKG table tennis athletes also take part in leagues - because they are not top tier, and the income stream from WTT probably will never come.
Declaration. I heard from the players on why they need to continue to play while injure.
I had to read up on HKSI information for this post.
I am still not wrong on the low salaries even from the so called tieba user experts view on how few players get paid well, and the other 200~400 players in the mens and womens should just sit and rot? It is so weird why such a user keeps pushing players to only play WTT, and leave all leagues? And even if you have a few that are earning top tier, how about the rest? such logic sure is extremely flawed, or unless he has specific agendas he needs to push, ie pro WTT agendas?
