Yeah, 底板, literally "bottom board", is one of a select few terms that does not translate well. In a sense, sole plate, a woodworking term, is a rather fitting translation.

In much the same way, it took me a while to get the meaning of blade (why so aggressive lol) when I first started visiting English forums which still puzzles me to this date.
