Mu Zi beat Wu Yang. So she is qualified for the women's single for wttc 2015 with Liu Shiwen. Congrats to Mu Zi !!

Wow ! This is really interesting ! It means that either Zhu Yuling or Chen Meng or Wu Yang or even maybe Li Xiaoxia won't participate at the WTTC 2015 because of the (stupid) new rule. This is a really bad stupid rule.

Mu Zi seems to have an interesting story/background. I remember it's not her real name but she was called the Mu Zi in her childhood (which mean the miracle I think) and she kept this name (I don't remember why, a sad story I guess). If someone knows more about this...

What's the rule about?

Don't be too surprised if Mu Zi for one reason or another somehow manages to be excluded from the team.

The rule for WTTC 2015 and 2017 is 5 players max per country (3 + 1 if you have a top 100 player + 1 if you have a top 20 player) and 1 another if you are the host country (so 6 players for China this time).

Yeah, I was thinking the same when she qualified but I really hope it won't be the case. I don't think so though.

Mu Zi did really well in previous "Road to WTTC" trails. For example, in 2011, she was the champion of "Road to Rotterdam", but she failed to make the single's match. Because the rule at that time was awful. The winner of "Road to Rotterdam" only guarantees a spot in the WTTC squad. You are not sure to play in the singles. So she paired Hao Shuai in the mixed double match and got her second sliver medal in mixed double.

For this time, the rule is clear that the winner will participate in the single's match. So I'm sure that Liu Guoliang will let her go unless she is injured during that time.

Yes, I agree. She surely is a very good player. I wonder why she never had a chance in a big competition like in 2011 or 2013 when she did good in trials like you say. Especially, you could still send 7 players at that time.
I remember having read that coaches didn't trust her very much because she was not regular in her performances. She played good one day and bad the other day. But to win 2 "Road to WTTC" trials you surely must be good and regular. Did she lost several times to foreigners ?

It's a really interesting topic to discuss.

First, she uses medium pimpled rubber for her backhand, so the coaches always worry she might not do well in International tournaments because of her special style. And she've lost to foreigners before. For example, she lost to North Korean's Park Mi-young in China open 2008.

Second, she was born in the Jan 1989, which makes her no advantage over players like Ding Ning and Liu Shiwen, who were just one year younger than her. So the coaches think she isn't worthy to give chances. And players like Guo Yue, Guo Yan and Li Xiaoxia were better than her at that time. But I really don't know why she didn't get the chance to play in the single's in wttc 2011 because there were even two choppers Wu Yang and Fan Yin who played in the single's. I guess something happened we don't know.

Thirdly, she was regarded as a disobedient player before and she was not coach's favorite. She was even relegated to the B team in 2012 or 2013 due to "injury". During that time she didn't get any chance to play in any international tournaments or opens. People even thought she was going to retire. But she stayed and insisted her dream to be a world champion. She changed a lot during the time in B team. She played really well in the Chinese Super Leagues and she won the women's double title in China National Games. She also managed to come back to A team in 2013. She was much more matured.

I think these reasons above made her not favored by the coaches and she was not given much chance. But I think she will realize her dream without doubt.

First, she is a really good double player who won two silvers in wttc mixed double's and won the champions of women's double in the China National Games. She might get a chance in the double's in wttc and hopefully she can win a medal.

Secondly, I think she will at least get a spot in the team squad of world team cup.

Mu Zi is my favorite female player :D, although her dressing and playing style like boy.

Ok, thanks fz29888 for this insight. I like her style too and I heard too she was a bit rebellious.
I already asked above but as you seem to know quite a few things about her, do you know more about her background ? I read she had a difficult childhood and Mu Zi (which means miracle?) is not her real name but she was called like this when she was young. And this is because these difficulties that she is now tough and persistent.

Mu Zi's name is interesting but not mean "miracle". Her previous name was Li Muzi. In Chinese characters 李木子。As u may recognize MU Zi(木子) is the head and feet of her family name Li(李). This is interesting. She changed her name to Mu Zi following her grandpa's suggestion when she get In the Chinese National Team. Maybe for people easier to know and remember Her.
