It's not really the power that's an issue, it's the arc. Without spin to borrow it's a bit harder to spin up the ball. Against topspin you can hit more and brush less, against backspin you can really brush and the ball will still drop. Against no-spin though you brush hard and it goes out, you don't brush enough and it goes into the net.
I still maintain the key to a quality return versus these no to little spin soft return is the footwork of entering into the table. Whilst there, if the ball is still high ( above the net ) then you can flick it straight-away. If you are late and the ball has dropped, then perhaps a soft touch drop shot near the net. If the opponent is of lower skill, most likely scenario is he will be late to return the ball with quality, either popping up for you to get a winner or the ball goes into the net.

Problem might not be only the junkie opponent.
your friends might be used to your game, and they should be more relaxed while playing with you.

But against another player, they need more shot selection, more thinking, more attention, also it might be more tense.

I think it’s common thing and seems to me playing good in training versus worse in a match situation.
