OSPH, maybe I should have mailed one of the two sample Nexy Edge Tape I got.

I have wood filler in my Nexy ruck and it would take maybe 5 minutes to bring that shape back to original.

Unfortunately (but good for your feel at impact) Amazon has really soft wood. I have one more Amazon C Pen with me new... Nexy Korea kept sending me the C Pen instead of the ST.

I coached yesterday night. I had watched my temp student (his coach is on vacation) struggle with a pips player and a heavy push and slow spin lefty so I sent him some material on how to play pips and took my pips rackets to the club. I had taken the week off because my elbow was really hurting after all the time spent trying to fix my technique. I decided to change my pendulum serve technique but more on that later.

So after we warmed up, I started telling him to loop the ball lower and take it late. IMO, his biggest problem is that despite his bad footwork, he is always trying to loop like a 2300 level player and that requires him to get to the ball on time in ways that puts his technique under pressure and leave him unable to play the next shot against a block. The lack of arc also leaves him very little margin vs heavy backspin balls and plays into the hands of good off the bounce blocking.

In general, my approach to table tennis is conservative. I try to build a game that let's people play relaxed table tennis with consistency first. After they can do this, then I tend to raise the risk of their shots but keep reminding them that the higher risk requires them to get to the ball on time or to do things to the opponent that creates the opportunity to use those shots.

We worked on high arcing spin for a while then we went to high arcing third ball as set up for kill. Then we did some work on pips as he had a hard time realizing that he needs to trust his read of how a ball comes off his racket as an indication of what spin is on the ball.

After we hit for about 30 mins, he began to realize that after he pushed, he could pretty much attack any ball hard after the ball came back no matter what long pips shot I played. This was what I needed him to realize.

After that, I served and looped to him for a bit as I wanted him to be a bit more aggressive on the 4th ball block if the opening from his opponent was too safe.

Then he played some matches and I watched. The main problem he has is that he goes all out on the opening almost like a Rambo looper but he doesn't have Rambo looper serves so he is looping difficult balls with all out openers and leaving himself vulnerable to a block. To his credit, he won a couple of matches that I thought he couldn't win as he actually didn't always go all out and sometimes was able to meekly continue the rally after opening. He also looped more balls that his old style would have sent long or into the net and blocked better. It is still a painful process but the progress was impressive for one day of training (and weeks of begging and complaining).

Okay, that was yesterday. Will cover today in another post.

The best thing Baal ever told me, and since Baal has told me many great things, this had better be good:

Go to Amazon.com and get some gaffer tape. I will add the link when I get home. The roll is cheap $10, the amount is huge, the tape protects both blade and rubber and is very sticky and transferable and lasts forever.

That's pretty interesting!

Does it tear just as easy as duct tape?

That tape has a nice width, I asked about that tearing because I could only find rolls of tape that are much wider (in Holland). For my new racket I bought Yasaka edge tape, but that seems to be pretty thin. My current racket has Donic edge tape on it, that's just as thin, but there's an unbranded layer of tape underneath it. I'm not entirely sure what that exactly is, I didn't build the racket myself.

I bought from the first link in Jan 2015. I have been giving out tape ever since and still have too much left. Think of it as cheaper and better edge tape.

Every Saturday is my 1 or 2 hour training from my regular coaches. Fortunately or unfortunately they are away on vacation for the weekend. So i decided to take a lesson with another coach who is a former China provincial player & German League player.

I really like switching up coaches sometimes because you can pick there brains if you present them with the right question. And they also give you technique adjustments that your regular coach may not give you. I also love the stories about there former glories and hijinks.

1. Me looping forehand to his forehand block. He noticed right away that i was not rotating my forearm foreward so the ball does not fly off the table. I have been consciously using more risk snap to create more arc in my strokes but this may have lead to opening up the racket head too much. With the minor adjustment, my loops were landing at a good consistent pace...but looping to a former pro player is no fun, they block back everything and i mean everything. But i felt even if the lesson ended right now, i got my moneys worth. He helped me with a technique i have been struggling with for a long time.

2. Backhand to backhand. I told him this will be my 3rd time training with inverted smooth backhand since i switched back from shortpips backhand. Again right away, he told me i was using too much forearm and using too much punch block(shortpips habit). He told me to shorten the stroke. Start my stroke from my stomach or above and and use a more closed racket face & wristier stroke. All of a sudden in my mind i felt like i was doing Otcharovs backhand stroke...lol...Money well spent today:D Then I had to slow down a little because i have a bad habit of ramping up my pace too much and become spastic....so i decided to ask him where did he learn his backhand from. He told me back in his China days his backhand was more punch block sort of like Ma Longs. But his present backhand is from playing in the German League. He told me Timo Boll and Otcharov strokes are very wristy and thats how he learned his present day backhand. Less forearm more wrist rotation. He said now the new generation of Chinese players such as FZD use a much wristier stroke. This is great insight coming from a former pro player...light bulb lights up in my head...When a coach can connect with you, its a great feeling of understanding.

3. Went to 2 backhands and 1 forehand loop all to his backhand block....Got really tired very fast...These type of switching strokes is my worst enemy...i know i have to work on it more...i must learn to like it or i will never get better.

4. Backhand underspin push to coaches backhand and he delivers a semi mid long push down to my forehand and i forehand loop....i was pretty gassed at this point and starting to miss a lot of forehand loops. I just called it a day at around 45 to 50 minutes into the lesson... and just watched him coach his regular junior player for the next hour or so.

Conclusion...It was great he pointed out a lot of my bad technical habits. The bad is once he sees you have some aptitude, he will ramp up your pace and at my age and injuries...i get worn down really fast. I think once in a while i will schedule a training with him because it would be good for me.

I also like posting now because i find it beneficial to review what you learned that day. Thanks and keep it bouncing.:D

Long time i didn't come here, wasn't interested in to post anything since my last posts, but now i have one question and won't post more.

I am planning to buy a table tennis Table very soon, i found one model and got the price quotation and it sounds i can afford it, hope very soon, so once i get the table then i will think about the robot, can you recommend me about robot that is good enough, but not very cheap if it lacks many things, also not very expensive too much that i can't afford it, but i may go with middle or reasonable priced one that is good enough for most strokes.

I didn't play today so I will discuss what happened yesterday. I taught the last of 4 classes for beginners. At the same time, there was a college TT event at my club. It was hard teaching with the noise and the limited tables but I did my best. There were also some good matches, most of them involving a student who came back into town from college with his school. He got some extra hike crowd support from clubmates.

After class was over I tried to work on my serve. It is amazing how I kept imagining myself doing one thing while my mind kept doing a completely different thing, which looked like what I always did. Changing technique and habits can be painful so try to be on the right path as early as possible.

I was trying to avoid playing because I had the week off. The night before, which I described, a 1600 player asked me to hit and I tested out some strokes and we played two "one player serves all the time" matches. I won when he served 3-0 but went down when I served 0-2 before coming back to win in 5. I keep forgetting that as tricky as my serves can be, it's hard to deceive someone if you repeat the same serve to them all the time.

On Saturday though, I was also concerned with fixing my forehand technique. A lot of people have commented on my forehand recovery as one of the big issues that I have to fix if I want to become more effective. Even with my limited mobility, some people think I can still break 2200 if I fix that one problem. My elbow and shoulder still piss me off as well as my knees so I don't think about such goals as much anymore but I have been giving the topic some thought.

A Larry Hodges blog post discussed a student of his with a similar but slightly different problem. Larry got the student to play forehand fades as his main looping stroke as the solution so that the student would stop bringing his follow through habitually across his body. I think that this might very well be the solution to my issue as well. I am now committed to making the Wang Liqin style fade my basic forehand topspin so that I stop finishing across my body. Over time, I will modify it of course. Early results were promising but I will now firmly commit.

I then hit with a newcomer of sorts to the club. While hitting with him, I tried some strokes out but then while I am not sure who was to blame, the hitting started to deteriorate. Part of the problem with my game is that I coach too much. Since I coach, I give people the ball where they like it too often. And people then tee off on the ball and I am not good enough to always control it. Moreover, the part of my game where my level really shows vs u1500 players is my serve game, where I can win many points just off serves.

So I got mildly annoyed at the way he was teeing off on the ball and knew that escalating the shots would not help as I am too used to feeding people balls to hit. So I decided to play him in a match. After we played, he didn't ask for a rematch so I felt satisfied I had done my job. For a good portion of the match, he couldn't push my backspin serve properly.

Then a 2100 player asked for matches and I didn't feel ready to play someone at that level but went along for the ride. The thing with this guy is that he had tremendous power and movement so you have to attack first or set him up carefully. He also has good serves and tricky sidespin pushes. I lost the first match but won the next two. He then tweaked something and hard to retire. He was rusty but the good thing was that my fade backhand counter block held up under his looping pressure far better than in recent memory.

Today, I was going to continue to work on the fade but instead, spent a lot of time watching the Euros. As much as I like Lebesson, I find his serve an insult to the rules of table tennis and an illustration of how bad the service rules and their enforcement are. That said, I find my fascination with his forehand grew as he had clearly the best forehand in the tournament. I also fell in love with Dyjas backhand and hope he will get a chance to play the Chinese more often very soon. He is only 21 so there is hope for Europe as I don't think anyone other than Fan Zhendong is rivaling that backhand power.

The last thing is that I made a modification to my grip again. It seemed very minor but I think it made my grip easier to nail down and will help a lot for the month. I have a club tournament this weekend for as well as the Teams tournament in a month during Thanksgiving. I am treating that as my last major event so I will put in some effort to do well, health permitting. One month may be too short but let's see how well the fade fix goes. My serves are good so it really is about return and rally.

Had a "tryout" for the college team and didn't manage to get in. It's really tough to get in in the first place since its members are 2000+ players (with 2 ex-pro players)

I went back to my TBS and put rakza 7 on both sides. Pushing is harder with how faster the blade is but having the whole blade as the sweet spot is just really nice. I'm in a position where I have to fix so many fundamental stuffs that dealing with sweet spot is extremely bothersome

From experience I can say that the first damage to something is most 'painful' though. Not sure if others also experience it like that.

Hopefully your blade only got some minor damage.

Overall in the grand scheme of things, it is minor, but as you mention the first damage is most painful. Especially in my case as the blade and rubber is only 3 weeks old!

Thank you Jirrex!

Won table one in league tonite. Got by owners son 11 to 9 in 5th and he had almost worst day of his life blocking. He wins me on almost touch alone. I am almost low 1800s in one league and 2020 to 2030 in another league.

Congrats! and WOW at your low-end rating in the one league!

Yeah I'm going to get the Baal/NextLevel gaffer tape as well as wood filler. I tried gluing back the 2 chipped pieces and played the next night and they fell off ... lost one piece and have the other piece. But I'm imagining that once i put on the LP OX and should i ever need to take off the LP, the chipped piece would come off. Better off with wood filler.

LOL at Nexy Korea on the mis-send again.

Wood filler is good, just take your time with it and sand it smooth. Repair will be a pro.

Nexy Korea might have done that on purpose to expand into the Penhold world.

Did you slap on a black LP OX or a color sheet yet?

The league (Smash ttc) where I am always mid 1800s is because besides the owner I never defeat, he is 2250 playing level, there are no players in 1900 and 2000 levels. There are 5 players in the low to mid 1800 level who can defeat me.

The owners son owns me, he could be on xerox power and defeat me on touch alone. My last 15 matches vs him I MIGHT have won 4. He has bad matchups and sometimes loses to even lower players whose luck and or funky play style troubles him.

Basically, he passes his rating away to these players every two weeks, then eats my rating, but he keeps in very low 1800s, so every time I lose vs him, I lose 15 points... and I lose almost every time.

I could be one table one with a group of 6 players and defeat everyone and lose to owners son. I still lose 5 or 8 points even though I went 4-1. Sometimes the other low 1800s players win, so I drop huge on those nights. One cannot defeat all 5 of these players all the time, you will lose 1/4 of the time to one of them.. that will drop your rating big time, even though you have an excellent winning record of around 72 to 80 percent.

Not yet Der, a friend of mine helped me order the LP and we will meet up when it's in.

Despite the short pips feeling too heavy and making my hand hurt, i brought it along for tonight. May slap it on to try it again. That and also to protect the backside until the LP is on cos I'm a klutz lol

EDIT: in the wee recesses of my pea brain, i'm still entertaining the idea of being the next Liu Guo-liang and play short pips on my FH and RPB with the smooth ... BUT i'm still concerned about the weight and possible carpal tunnel syndrome from years of computer keyboard typing.

The Chantilly Chinese club has a Sunday Elite league with several 2100 to 2200 level players. I can defeat the 2150 chopper occasional, maybe 10 vs a 2200 sp player, and almost always vs the 2000 plus level lp player. I have a good record vs the rest of the 2000 or near 2000 players and a very good 90 percent plus record vs their 1800 crowd.

That means my rating at that club stays at or above 2000 for the last 9 months.

The players usatt ratings are very close to their club rating. Maybe their club rating is a bit low.

That is the devil of it all in the DC MD VA area... called DMV area. So many upper 1700 and low 1800s whose true level is 2000 or are capable of defeating 2000 level players. We all gotta face each other and no one of us will have 90 percent plus record vs each other, so we all keep each others ratings down. If we all did 6 tourneys per year with players from around everywhere, then we would be more accurately rated.

I will play in DC NA 2016 teams and should face such a varied crowd. That will give me a chance to put up or shut up if my body can hold up. If I gotta tear apart a palette and make me a crutch I will do that until I drop, then find a chair to prop me up.

I recall ~4 weeks ago, that Saturday night, I show up at 10:30 pm after you all have been at it since 4pm or so ... I asked you, "Got any games left in you?"

and your reply was along the line of,

"I always have a few games left in me!"

Good luck and have fun! May all the net shots go your way!
