Last night:

1) Played with "E" - in the past, she has beaten me all the time but we have had close games. She is a PH who has long pips on her backside. Last night, she won a 3-1 win over me. First game, I decided to serve mostly rocket serves to her BH with some to her middle and a few to her FH to keep her guessing. I won 11-4. Then, intentionally or unintentionally she jedi mind tricked me ... she complained she couldn't see my serve and with my new bat (like that Yecats? :) ) the ball came back to her unexpectedly (not sure how to translate what she said, but it wasn't meant that my returns were like longpips or something). That first game, I had a few lucky blocks ... perhaps the MX-P and/or soft wood of the Amazon bat threw her off.

Previously when i used my Avalox bat and DHS H3 rubber, she complained the ball came back dead ... which is funny cos, her regular hitting partner i call 'si hing' (and he always beats me but in close games), when i hit with him, his chinese rubber comes back with dead balls... i find it hard to warm up with him as he doesn't add power or spin to his shots, just passive blocks and ball dies out. So in a way, i think E is jedi mind tricking me... when i was way younger, i literally had no mercy when it came to games... friend, young, old, male, and female ... all the same to me, if it was a game, i will do my best to win it. Now in my maturer age, I seem to go easy on some partners especially females. So yeah, lost the next 3, 1 close, and 2 lopsided wins for E.

Vs E, I had some good loops/punches/blocks/smashes, but too few after her jedi mind trick. No video, nowhere to set up my phone/tripod.

Hindsight is 20/20 they say, instead of waiting to play the winner of E and si-hing, i should've waited on the table with the 1900 LP chopper. He was playing "G" whom I played once before, ~1900 - 2000... SH power looper ... his Ma Long serves and power loops were too fast/powerful for my game. But my reasoning was that I'm still inconsistent and especially now moreso with me adjusting to the new bat, I didn't want to screw myself up playing the chopper.

2) Hit with J next for about an hour. Added the shortpips back on to see if i can get used to the weight. I blocked for him so he can work his loops for ~40 mins. Seemed ok with the weight. Didn't use the SP. My hand didn't hurt aftewards.

I then tried looping for ~20 mins with the SP on the back --- very strange... either weight or still getting used to new bat/rubber. Didn't loop well but did land some. Frustrated, took off the SP and seemed to loop better albeit inconsistently. Lucky J didn't mind picking up balls on my misses. I tried to loop controlled, slow and easy but either light bat or bad looping form/stroke, i was 50/50 or even 40/60. I decided to just let rip with power loops... landed a lot more consistently. Rally didn't continue much though as J was not able to block them all.

The ups and downs of my journey back into TT ... a bit frustrated last night. But all part of the (re)learning process of my game in general and now also of the new bat/rubber.

Will be putting on the longpips ox for some weight to the bat tonight. Will see if that helps.

------------

Der_Echte,

I have to sand/file the wings a little... wood is biting into my index finger too much. My concern is that the bat is already light already, I don't want to sand too much lol

-------------

Continued thoughts/review/evaluation on Nexy's Amazon CPen bat with MX-P rubber:

Excellent BH blocking ... excellent smashing ... punches are good ... responds well to my close-to-the-table oldschool one-sided Cpen game.

My FH loops, when my stroke/form is 'on' is great too. But lately, my looping has been off... too much mental baggage in my pea brain.

I highly recommend the Nexy Amazon CPen with MX-P for anyone who plays like me with the close-to-table PH attacking style.

Looking to rid my mental baggage when i slap on the LP OX for weight tonight and will test out this combo of Nexy Amazon/MX-P/LP OX

-------------------------------

I am da worst LOL

Thank you as always TTD CCers!

OSPH... all Korean penholders shave their blades. Have at it. When Koreans shave off too much, the crazy glue on a thin sliver of cork and shave again to get it right.

Thank you Der!

Archo asked in past how PH twiddle - suds79 has a playlist on his channel about twiddlers

i don't know if there's an official way to twiddle as a PH, but here's a short vid of only the 2nd time for me trying to twiddle.

a little experimentation on my part, seems for me the easiest and fastest way is to use the middle finger as the index and thumb hold on ...

not sure if i will stick to one-sided play or try to twiddle, but i was curious and wanted to try it out

this was easy given that gravity was helping with the blade pointed vertically down ... i see the challenge as being able to twiddle when the blade is horizontal ... will be watching suds79's twiddling playlist... perhaps they twiddle with blade vertical first and then bring it into their ready position

Thanks Suga, I'm glad my advice comes across as useful haha :) :) My definitions of Short term/middle term/long term are slightly different, but it Is completely unique to everyone and no one is right or wrong when setting personal goals!!

To add to what you said about goals, and I'm sure you know this already, but for Archo's info:-

You should ideally have a good mixture of technical and result based goals which are:

Technical goals: A goal based on technique/training that can often be measured i.e. hitting 9/10 serves that bounce twice on the opponents side or hitting a rally of 200 shots.

Result goals: These are purely "outcome" goals and can be anything from winning a set off an opponent of a higher level to winning the Olympics (and anything in-between!) These can also involve qualifying for certain events and achieving a certain ranking.

Result based goals usually motivate you to achieve your technical goals! :)

I hope this helps :)

That is some top-notch piece of information.
Beautiful add-on. Thanks for pointing this out.
Absolutely correct.

These are some of my coaches from my club. I just took a lesson with GYJ last Saturday.

I really like to watch this video slowed down to .25 speed on YT. This helped me recognize the wrist snap that i was missing in my forehand loop. I used to lock out my wrist too much.

This one is for my TTD penholder friends. LJ is a former China Team B player and lefty penholder with short compact spinny forehand loops. Her rating 2 years ago is USATT 2650 and still would be #1 or #2 highest womens player in the United States. The one in red TW is also a former Beijing provincial player and i take lessons with her the most.

Good catch. Nice technique. Is the ball feeder also your coach?

Xie xie! Very interesting footwork ... 1:18 - 1:29 ... she doesn't "shuffle", very small hops i guess is one way to describe LJ's footwork.

The ball feeder is S a wise old man who partly coaches Jennifer Yue Wu (Rio Olympian for USA). All the coaches in my club likes to train with S.

Remember when we used to debate these things?

It's not so much wrist action as using a whip motion and relaxing the forearm and wrist. You could ask him whether he uses his wrist and he might say no or he might say yes. But both answers are correct - the wrist is a joint. You can't use a joint - you can only use the things joint by it.

I remember our conversation and have tried to fix things. Yes in fact he was trying to correct one of his junior students this weekend(1900 rated). This junior watched too many ZJK videos and started locking/closing the angle of his forehand loops and created many issues such as sidespin loop and late too the ball. Now my strokes are clearly different from a year and a half ago. I definitely understand that relaxing brings out a better techniques in forehand or backhand, better whip action, better trajectory of the ball... overall a better game too. Relaxing also helps me from tensing up my bad back too. I can credit you implanting the idea in my head and i will keep working on it. Thanks NL.:D

Quick question: how do i know if the table is for outdoor or indoor? what will be the problem if using the table outdoor under sunlight? sure not under dust or rain or storm, but the sunlight is also a factor, so how can i determine if the table can resist or not regardless of the quality level?

Open your own thread for this, this thread is mostly to discuss what we are trying to do with our table tennis games.
