Hey Jeff, I am new here. Where do you play? I play at the Swan TT club (same as the troublemakers).

I am RPB user too, with only RPB and never use traditional push block. When I first started playing TT I forced myself to only use the backside of the paddle. But even then, my backhand has always been weak during games compared to forehand. I took lessons but none of the penhold coaches there knew how RPB works, so naturally they taught me to use forehand all the time, even on the backhand side. So I had less chances to use my backhand, and over time my backhand never improved.

Hey Jeff,

Recently with youtube having more videos of RPB and watching videos of myself, I felt my RPB improved, and now I play a much more 50/50 game on both sides. But it took me a long time to figure things out.

For your video, if you compare to ttMonster's post with video of Wang Hao, you can see that:

1. WH's elbow is pointed to the right hand side. So his upper and lower arm is like a narrow ">". That way, it's easier to use the elbow as a pivot point. His ball contact point is the middle-to-right side of body. In your video, your upper/lower arm is like a "L", or sometimes even close to straight when your contact point is on the left side of the body, so it's harder to twist your elbow for power

2. in WH's stroke, you can see during ball contact his elbow points forward/down, but after contact, the elbow changes direction to point to the right. That's because his paddle momentum is not just moving forward, but also moving to the right hand side. So recovery is automatic, like what ttMonster mentioned. After each stroke his paddle ends in the middle between forehand and backhand, so he can transition if needed. In your video, your paddle momentum is moving forward only, with no right-hand-side momentum. So after each stroke is finished, you have to manually "pull" your paddle back. So the overall feeling is that your strokes are "up/down/up/down" along a straight line, but WH's strokes are like "continuous smooth circles" near his right abs--he does not need to put in effort to "change stroke direction", its always in the same direction along a circle.

Anyways that's my 2-cents from a fellow RPB learner :)

... and William got the fairplay award for the tournament ( I am going to buy him a santa clause fake beard ) , he was kind enough to play three lets on match point when each of the points / serves were legitimate winner from our side ...

Welcome back Jeff! I hope the exams went well! Looking forward to more of your cool videos :) Are you playing in a league again?

Thanks Boogar! Yeah finished with all my exams!
Not currently as it is too late in the year, but hopefully next year I can participate in one if my job is not too hectic!
Nice video btw, you have improved so much since the last time I watched one of your match videos! Very nice bh loop against backspins and spinny forehands.
Si-hing!!!

Welcome back! You are looking good!!

I have no technical comments because as you know I'm trying to learn the RPB myself and am an inconsistent looper.

But it's inspiring to see your strokes and that you are back into TT after the injury recovery and final exams!

Good to see you again Si-hing!

~si-dai

Thank you Si-hing~ !
You are always so encouraging. How are you going with the RPB?
Yeah, I need to do a bit more exercise to get back in shape. I feel like my waist circumference has expanded a bit.

Welcome back @JeffM ! I am sure you would have done this a lot , but I was just tyring to compare your stroke to Wang Hao's video ( which I know is not the most optimal thing to do but what the heck I know very little about RPB technique ) ... I feel the stroke could be a more compact and the recovery faster ( use core and waist a little more ) ...

Thanks for the video ttmonster! I shall keep working on it!

Jeff, I like it that you are very controlled doing this drill, no need to do max shots.

Thanks Der-Echte!

Hi confiscate, thanks for your advice! I am playing in Australia. Happy to see another fellow RPB penholder! You started playing rpb without traditional backhand?

Ya when I was small I almost never got to play TT at all--the rare times I happen to by chance be around a TT table I "played" with traditional push block. Basically I didn't know anything about TT at all at that point.

But when I actually bought my first paddle and started playing, I was equally bad at RPB blocking and traditional blocking anyways, so out of curiosity I decided to go with RPB. Figured it would be fun to learn something new

Blocking in concept is very simple. Get to the ball, loose hand. You will be in a position to see ball better and adjust bat angle, but blocking off the bounce with soft hand gives room for error, much more room than impacting ball even 6 inches from ball.

Confiscate, you are up to 7 posts, tell a few TT stories to make 10 posts and pic/vid posting rights.

ttmonster, a TT friend of mine in Australia posted some santa pics, looks like santa earning a living in OZ scaring children...

Ya but he was just not good enough to handle Timo's controlled looping ... with that improved backhand Timo is never getting out of position these days ...

Karlsson was the sharpest player I saw in the qualification round - the way he killed Gnanasekaran was just bloody. Boll better wake up and get crowd support.

My Kim Jung Hoon ST is Broken !!! Went for a ball just to side of corner and caught blade on edge of table, snapped the living daylights outta the blade's neck. Blade is through. Damn, they don't make this blade any more, I only got two left. Guess I better start liking the new Nexy Arche, since one side is white ash...

Actually one now, it is an 87 gram F, the other two are in FL with the CEO.

Our supplier looks like there is just an 86 gr FL remaining, prolly pick that up next order. man this is/was a great blade too bad they don't make it any moar. Still, I can later get by on the Lissom or hopefully the Arche.
