World number one Ding Ning and World number four Liu Shiwen both reached the Women's singles final at the Slovenian Open World Tour 2012. On route to the final Ding Ning defeated Guo Yan by four games to one (11-3,5-11,12-10,13-11,11-4). In the other semi final draw Liu Shiwen defeated Wu Yang by four games to zero (11-6,11-4,11-3,11-6).

It seems Ding Ning has done her homework. The last time these two players met was at the Pro Tour Grand Finals 2011 where Liu disposed Ding by 4 games to 0. This time around Ding Ning defeated Liu Shiwen by 4 games to 2 with scores: 13-11,6-11,9-11,11-7,11-7,11-3
The match was exhilarating with both players giving their absolute all! The match was very close and tense and at 2 sets each Ding Ning produced the shot of the match and arguably shot of the tournament. Liu topspin the ball wide, which forced Ding Ning to dive for the ball and in doing so rolled on the floor. Ding's retrieve put the ball around the net however Liu returned safely to win the point. Ding Ning went on to win the fifth set 11-7.
In the sixth set Ding Ning maintained momentum as she took a 4-2 lead forcing compatriot Liu away from the table to defend. Relentless Ding Ning maintained the pressure with lighting arm speed to give herself 7 match points. Ding won the last point to win 11-3!
