This is a fun topic. I want in, so here's my two cents.
What I think is that this sport has a peculiarity over many others. You can start playing (and it happens often) when you are "old". And with age, comes adult money.
So my guess is that the forums (which is not exactly where the younger generations gather) attract the people that see this as the new hobby. And they want to compare them because it's fun, with the excuse of improving your game. I know I'm at least guilty of the first part of that sentence. I have like 10 different set ups. But most of them are not comparable, they are there just for the lols of playing with middle pips.
