Weakest world #1 can be a fun exercise when we apply it at a point in time without the benefit of hindsight of what happened afterwards (which we of course don’t have for Lin Shidong at the moment). Some candidates:

Ma Long in 2010: lost to Timo in the WTTTC finals (still over 2 years away from winning his first major title).

Ma Long in 2012: Failed to qualify for Olympic singles despite being ranked #1. The book on Ma Long at the time was that he was technically gifted but would crumble mentally in big events. And he was four years older at the time than Lin Shidong is right now. Seems pretty weak!

Wang Chuqin in August 2024: Lost to Truls in R32 at the Olympics, hadn’t won a major, about to lose his #1 ranking to Lin Shidong. Hilariously weak!

And of course, Ovtcharov was #1 for a grand total of two months, which was a great accomplishment, but almost certainly the weakest #1 on this list.

Don't know how I feel about that ping pong dance group lol
I dislike these pre-match shows or whatever you wanna call it. In Frankfurt it was some random dance group and a juggler doing his thing and I had to see them on both days I was there last year.

and to dig deeper, the old ranking point gains/losses are also a lot more tougher than today.
I wonder if LSD can still be WR1, I'm almost certain FZD would be WR1 for a good time, until his 1 year of no participation push him out of the count

Definitely more keen to watch Truls vs LSD but also want WMY to win as tired of seeing SYS win again, though latter happening means more delay to the former :censored:.

I don't need to turn facts in my favor and I think you should check the meaning of straw man cos you clearly have no idea what you're talking about 😂
I make a point about atm, you argue against "at one point", that's moving the goal posts. You don't have a ground to stand on so you jump to the next nearest heap of trash, no offense.

Know when to quit.

Not gonna lie I kinda zoned out because I have seen them play against each other like a hundred times to exaggerate.

perfectly said. Ovtcharov probably was the weakest #1 (2018) as far as I can remember, but that's mainly due to rule change and technicality that he was even ranked #1 at the time. He was not the best player in the world at that time. Other players who were as strong or stronger at that exact time

Clearly Stronger
* Ma Long
* FZD
* Xu Xin

Similar Strength
* Timo Boll
* Jun Mizutani
* Tomokazu Harimoto (I think he already beat Ovtcharov in that year)
* Lin Gaoyuan
* Hugo Calderano

Compare to LSD today

Clearly Stronger
* None

Similar Strength
* WCQ

MS F
LSD (1) 3-4 Moregard (6) (-8, 8, -10, -8, 4, 11, -9)
G1 75, 811. 1 point only for LSD after missing that popup. Both were tense.
G3 84, 89, 99, 910, 1010, 1012. Similar to G1.
Moregard started to feel pressure after LSD got used to his pace and serve-n-attack. His winning percentage once past the 3rd/5th and 2nd/4th shots went down significantly but his BH defense came to save the day again. A game of cat and mouse.
G4 44, 54, 58, 78 TO for Moregard, 79 LSD whiffed the popup, 710, 810, 811
G5 71, 72, 92, 94, 114
G6 30, 31, 41, 43 TO for LSD, 44, 74, 75 big net for Moregard, 85, 86, 96, 98. 108 epic chiquita from LSD, 1011, 1311
G7 20 slight net for LSD, 23, 43 epic save of nets from both, 53, 54, 64, 66, 86, 88, 98, 911
