I am new to the competitive table tennis world. In college I played a lot but mostly with just friends. One of my friends played competitively and wanted me to start joining him, so I acquired a very basic all around paddle that I have had now for four or five years. I believe it is a juic light offense III blade and the BH rubber is juic hirubia. Obviously the rubbers are dead now. I am currently looking for a whole new set up. I am back to playing daily and would like to start competing in the sport. This paddle was great for a beginner but I now would like to take my game to the next level. Could you offer some advice for the new set up I am looking at purchasing. I am currently looking into a infinity VPS V, Calibra tour M for forehand and Calibra sound for back hand, but I keep seeing different options and reading different reviews that make me second guess the rubber choices. I have an attacking style of play. I like too loop the ball onto the back side of the table with both back hand and fore hand. Top spin is huge for my game. I also like to spin and cut the ball a good bit. If you could offer some advice it would be greatly appreciated!

Hey I don't know exactly how good you are but considering what your looking at I'd say your pretty good. Personally I've used Joola Rhythm Original for about 6 months now (recently replaced them) after trying a friends and it has been so good! The spin when brand new I find awesome. I did recently change my blade to Joola Fever to give myself a bit more control and dwell time and I've felt more consistent with my attacking shots. What your suggesting sounds fine as well but at least I can offer you an opinion on something else.

Thank you for your input! It is greatly appreciated. I think that I am decent, I do not loose very often, but I have never played in competition. Is the Joola Rythm a softer rubber? I like to play fast and cant decide if I want a harder or softer rubber. Currently I am using soft rubbers and worried switching to a harder rubber will be to hard to adjust to.

Well in the catalogue it says 'hard 48 degrees sponge' and I like to play very fast but its also great for spinning. We have a guy at our club who is amazing and ive used him bat. You wouldn't even feel the ball hit it is so soft and I find it easier to get spin not power. Type in sam walker who has played for England since last I checked he had my setup and see if you can relate your style to his.

Unlimited number of possible suitable blades and rubbers, there are more and more each year.

Looks like you are committed to a quality setup and that is a good step.

I could name several from each company and have in my time on the forum. I would say try to get everything from the same place to save on shipping.

I will this time shamelessly Pimp NexyUSA.com and suggest the Peter Pan (5 ply wood OFF minus attacking blade with spin and control) or the Kanaph (The balde I use - crisp OFF blade with spin and good power) with the Demian II+ rubber or whatever favored rubber you got. I slapped on my favorite rubbers and was right at home with Kanaph and now I use Demian II+. Spinny and non-tacky rubber. Medium soft and works great with either blade. Neither of these blades is gunna break the bank.

You could also try to get with a couple suppliers and build yourself the famous "Der_Echte" Special on the cheap, a good project for the EXTREME budget minded.

I personally use Aurus (FH) & XP 2008 (a control rubber) but now have switched to Demian II+. maybe with time it will overtake the Excellent and consistent Aurus.

I made a thread recently where I took off a handle and added weight to my Kanaph to make it even more solid. I do that mod to a lot of blades.

When I decided to give up Tenergy 05 (I used to get it for $50 a sheet when I lived in Korea) I tried out several modern rubbers. I settled on Calibra LT at first when I was using TBS (before it broke :( ) and liked it for counterlooping and power shots. You had to be much more precise on opening loops. That got me to test Aurus and I loved it. Demian II+ is a medium soft sponge very grippy rubber that is easy to generate spin.. very important for me, my preference for first topspin is HEAVY, then I break out artillery and fire away.

Aurus on the other hand was like a Swiss Army knife, did a lot of things very well with control. Wasn't the spiniest rubber out there or the fastest, but I realized it worked for my game. After testing a lot of blades, I discovered it was very consistent on many different blades and I could rely upon it. I also liked Evolution series, FX-P in particular. nexy in Korea sold those rubbers and sponsored me, so of course I liked them, but NexyUSA does not have the marketing rights to sell Stiga and Tibhar like they do in Korea, but we can sell the Tibhar blades that Nexy designed for them.

That mod I do isn't for everyone to try at home, especially on an expensive blade when you do not have the confidence and experience to attempt it.

I call things as I see them.

It is odd that an equipment company President who is supposed to pimp up his brand every chance would advocate the inexpensive "Der_Echte Special" where I get the blade (896 for $16) and BH rubber (XP 2008 at $8) from colestt.com or eacheng.net and re-use a FH rubber (usually Aurus)... yet this simple combination works great as a bat to use when you are in between main bats, like when your main bat cracked beyond repair and you haven't replaced it yet. Experimenting with equipment that is inexpensive is a good way to gain experience with low money risk. it does add up over time though, but it is good experience. Plus, Cole is real kind to Military. I have done 30 yrs in Army and am about to retire soon, Cole has always hooked me up with extra free stuff for me or Soldiers when I was in Iraq, Korea, or even Stateside.

It sounds really crazy I would advocate alos inexpensive stuff being a President of a TT equipment company, but the market goes into several segments.

Many, the great majority of new players, generally want to spend the absolute minimum money on their equipment. For this I would say go to Walmart, get a $3,58 FL bat with SP , peel off the SP, and slap on what rubbers you like, problem solved for very little money. Some people do not have rubbers laying around, but Cole sells XP2008 at $8 a sheet and that isn't much at all, but still too much for some.

Military people particularly want their stuff for free for some unknown reason. Cole and other forumers have helped me with stuff to build bats for dozens of Soldiers to give them their own bat to play with when they were unwilling to purchase their own. Carl will tell you, I carry 3-5 "Der_Echte Specials" with always so someone can have a bat to use until they can get their own.

Then you got the segment of the market that wants a new bat, but will spend moderate low amount of money. Colestt.com is an outstanding place for the player who wants a functional bat at minimum cost... some bats are $30-$40 range... they wont have modern rubber on them like Claibra or whatever, but they will play and I have built many of these for personal use and for others, or simply advised them to buy from Cole.

Then you got the segment of the market that YOU are in... a player who has played a while... and who now wants a new bat, is willing to pay for top quality, but doesn't want the most absolute expensive stuff out there. Usually, such a bat with rubbers is in the $125 to $300 range. Not many are willing to invest this kind of money right away. Many new players get the inexpensive stuff at first, test out about everything there is cheap, then buy some moderate expensive bat. Such a player is right to be cautious like he is and tried out less expensive stuff first.

Some players are EJs... Equipment Junkies and will buy anything and everything TT themselves.. and love the life of it. I am an EJ myself, but it helped that I built my own stuff, recycled my rubbers, and chose not so expensive rubbers, picked up friends' stuff, and got sponsored and got a big discount. that allowed me to be constantly building and trying out stuff, then I became a tester.

Some players right away will go for the absolute most famous expensive stuff because that is wither their idea of quality (it is, but at a real top end price) or because they know their friends do not have such expensive stuff. That gives them the edge in the bragging rights.

Every company has a few blades and rubbers to match up well with your described playing style. If you go BTY USA, then a Timo Boll W5 or TBS with T05 or G3 and Sriver is just one of the possible combinations. You compare that to my recommendation of Peter Pan or Kanaph blades and Demian II+ rubbers. Either are suitable and will not cost you the super premium money, but none are basement bargain stuff either. You prolly know by now the entire TT industry has been trying for years to make a rubber like T05, (and never quite made it) but there is only one T05, I just don't want to pay what they are asking for it and it made me discover other rubbers I like.

That is very helpful! Yes I am wanting to spend around 150$ max and obviously the T05 is what I truly would like to buy. Like you said that is just too expensive right now. I am going to keep my current blade and try the Aurus and Damien II rubbers on it so I can have a back up bat. Also I am going to go ahead and get a whole new set up which I still cant decide which rubbers to get because there are just so many options. Thank you again for your help!

I have to be honest, I am not a big fan of the Calibra rubbers. They are fast but I don't like the way they grab the ball, especially for looping backspin on opening attacks.

I think there are a lot of good rubbers out there. I think Airock is better if you are looking at rubbers from Stiga. I personally like Tenergy, but I think things like Joola Rhyzm-P is probably good, the Andro Rasant line might be as well. But what I am using these days is Victas V>01. This is the first rubber I felt in a while that I liked more than Tenergy. It is made to grab the poly ball so it gets great spin and speed.

Soon I will try the Nexy Demien II. Then I will know if that is good for me but it definitely is affordable and I think it might be the right rubber. I think it was also developed for the poly ball.

What Carl mentioned is why I moved to Aurus. I could still open up heavy, but I had to be right there and read everything right. Aurus and many other rubbers are more forgiving in that department... but there was NOTHING like LT in mid distance loop the loop, it was serious powerful. Later, I discovered I parked myself closer to the table and could use a rubber that had better performance there.

If you haven't been following the forum, I made a thread where I did the same mod to a Nexy Sparticus I had laying around not in use and sent it to Abe through Carl. Abe chewed up his main blade, so I kicked him out the Sparticus and Carl made some seriously funny comments and pic sequence when he metup with Abe and gave him the Sparticus.

Thread is HERE. http://www.tabletennisdaily.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?9429-A-Gold-s-new-Spielzeug

I just mailed Carl Abe's uniform and a few rubbers to tryout (Elpis and Demian II+) and I am sure Carl is gunna wrestle with Abe over them again !) I sent Carl a market sample blade of the one I mentioned to you (Peter Pan), so I think he is gunna get a hit with that blade and his favorite rubbers, and he got a lot of them.

That is why Carl is talking about trying out Demian II+, also he has a secret code for discounts at NexyUSA, so maybe you hit him up.

Watchout for Carl if you gotta go to his secret hideout APT, he has a remote controlled trapdoor he likes to spring on unsuspecting goon squads. If you read the forum enough (you are still new) you would see the LULZ Carl brings to TTD in a lot of the threads.

harpo, before I had my 4 yrs of glory in Korea, I was in a remote location of USA in Oklahoma, even in a city of 100,000 people there ere no players there. 100 mile plus drive each way to OKC was out of the question. I was simply a rec player. I HAD to make good use of the forums to learn and TRY to improve. Good to see you got some table tennis near you and the possibility to make some action in TT where you are.

Der_Echte, now we get the story behind why you like to write on the forums so much. Me, I am just a blabber mouth. But you are sharing the love.

Harpo, this is what I would say about making a decision on which club. Play at each a few times. They probably have a day rate. Go, play and have fun. After a couple of times at each one, you may know which one you want as your home base. But, if you are like me and start getting really into it. You may find yourself going to all of them to some extent even if one is home base and you only visit the others once in a while. I know, for me, the social element and wanting to see the people at each club keeps me bouncing from place to place. But I have always had one club as home base. The first one that was home base, I outgrew. The second club, it closed down at some point. The third one is a lot of fun. But the guy who ran the 2nd home base opened a new club a little while ago so now I have two places I feel are home base.
