So, I have been spending countless hours practising looping and footwork, and I am finally approaching a level where I am at least a little bit satisfied with my skills.

I have however neglected my serves and never really practised them. They are not bad, but I want to put more focus on serve practise from now.

Please share with me your favourite videos / study material about serves and also your favourite exercises on how to practise serves by yourself.

Cheers!

favourite exercises on how to practise serves by yourself.
If you got a table and a catch -net the "formula" is simple: google serves, choose some YouTube videos, pick a serve , get a cardboard box full of balls and start serving. a couple of thousand serves you will get the feeling that you are making progress.
Sometimes I take a short video of myself and compare it with the YouTube video, that helps as well.
There are no short cuts.

what is your objective?

1. Killer Ace Serve?

2. Or a dependable & workable set-up serves?

Just as you have practiced your strokes, serving also needs to be trained.

Here are some tips:

  • Start by watching some YouTube videos: There are many that explain in detail how to execute them.
  • Choose a couple of serves that you can perform with topspin, backspin, and sidespin. The main idea is to try to confuse your opponent with the same serve but different spins.
  • Throw the ball consistently and at the same height each time.
  • Vary the direction and speed of your serves to keep your opponent guessing.
  • Obstacle training: An excellent way to improve the accuracy of your serves is to place obstacles in different positions on the table and try to hit them with the ball. This will help you improve your control and precision.
Personally, I did this last week with my daughter, and in one hour, she was already starting to execute serves for the first time. You could see she had improved a lot; she went from very amateur to almost professional (no exaggeration).

I just bought a tennis table to my home and put a net for the balls at him then started to serve: pendulum and backhand ones. After a month or so when the serves became really spiny I started to put variations like side spin/top/under. After half a year I have started to developing reverse pendulum - it was the hardest one but slowly I have mastered it too. I can serve tomahawk but rarely using it - mostly in fun matches.
As for time/amount of balls I do 100 balls per one serve so usually about 300 balls per session for three type of serve - usually it takes about 30/40 mins per day.

And I don’t find most videos on serving to be useful besides the guys like Craig Bryant and other few rarely occasions that showing some really interesting strategies or moves - but anyway you need to develop that feeling by continuously repeating the movement and isolating it for the training by urself.
