Is there a way to make a living from table tennis without being a professional athlete? With a table tennis academy or selling products? Is it really possible?
yes,
you still need to be a professional
academy - a professional coach
selling products - a professional businessman

if you an amateur, then you not going to get traction

If you start playing late there is zero chance of becoming a professional. I know of precisely one person who started playing full time at age 13 who became top 50 in the world. One. Most players start extremely young. One of my friends has wins over some of the top players in China but was never selected for the national team. He says he started too late by playing full time at ages 9 or so.

Now if you want to be a coach that is another story. You can start whenever and still have a chance at being a good coach. I know several local coaches who are probably pulling in between 100k and 200k a year. You have to be a good coach, work hard and most importantly be a people person. Even if you have skills, if you have the personality of a doorknob no one will want to learn from you.

Still, med school ppl earn the most. Im in engineering and also earn quite high, but it is nowhere as high as the doctors lol.

Think of the sweet money to motivate you!

HOW TO MAKE A PROFIT FROM ONE's OWN INTELLECT.

We did got a decent sum of royalties from China Yinhe 1986, since we did sell our dry booster innovation to them. So good to make money from one's own brain.

You need to find a stash of Ritalin or Adderall. Being in the medical field I'm sure you would have access to those. Make some connections in the Psych department and they can find you some free samples.

If you are not a World Ranked top 20 pro player, it is very hard to make enough to live off from playing TT.

In New York, I know many more TT clubs that have closed because they could not bring in enough money to keep the doors open than I know of ones that have been successful and stayed open for years. And it would take a decent amount of cash up front to open a facility. Worth knowing it would hard to ever make enough to break even and just get your initial investment back.

Selling TT equipment....does that sound like it would be fun? You could sell anything if you like the idea of being a salesman and I would put money on it you could make more than you could selling TT equipment since TT is such an niche sport with a small but dedicated group of players who really follow, in comparison to other sports.

But yeah, if you were someone like Tony who is a A+ coach and is known and has a reputation, you can make it so you do a little better than just barely getting by.

But the idea of Med School vs trying to make enough money off a Table Tennis hobby/addiction.....well,
If you don't have a problem living on bread and water go for it. Otherwise go to the golf range.

That kind of sums it up well enough. As long as you understand, sometimes that would be bread one day a week and sometimes water. I even know guys who are 2500 level players, decent level coaches but have a day job because the work coaching TT is not reliable enough.

It is a great sport to play and be involved in. But I can't think of anything that it would be as hard to pay your bills with. And being someone who turned a few hobbies into things that paid the bills, TT would be last on my list for that.

Is it possible to be a professional starting late?
late for coach, probably
for business man, business you are never late. You are either born to do business, or trained to do business.
you could always sell as a side business for starters and see.
no matter what you do, you need starting capital (for a coach, the starting capital is the years of training prior to become a coach, for stock, it would be money to by the stock etc).
