ITTF/WTT problems reported from players

says penhold dreamer
for sports people, we call it sports

for business people, it is called entertainment and there is profits and there is loss.
table tennis is not an easy busy...
if it wasn't for self funding of players, WTT participation (senior and junior) would decease by a hefty percentage and there would be no entertainment what so ever.

So, I feel, for WTT and ITTF to be successful, players need to have regular income, and this is what the leagues can give players that WTT/ITTF can't.

they need to find a structure that players can both play domestic leagues as well as international competition.
in the case for many sport codes, domestic leagues are bigger than international, except for say tennis, golf.
To have more money means to have more views and attention.

With the introduction of new ball table tennis became a little too boring for people to watch: no diversity in player base (Truls and Felix are good exceptions), no diversity in playing styles (where are all the top defenders?), these days table tennis is mostly pew-pew-pew, unfortunately.

TT became too niche, people who play and know table tennis - these are people who still adore the (skillful), but still pew-pew-pew style of table tennis.

I don't want to re-watch ML vs FZD Olympic finals.
However, I really enjoy re-watching some of the older games: 2008 Ma Lin vs Wang Hao, some random 2011 Opens are even more entertaining..or may be I am getting old.

@zeio was heming even ranked high enough to take part in smash/champions? considering he retired in 2022 and covid before that.

he said he quit as a pro international player, is the same reason as FZD??

The new WR system took effect in 1/2018 so he was more like 400-450. He was probably making peanuts before WTT so blaming it on them is, hmm...

Hmm, he was close to reaching top 50 all because of the changes (so blame it on ITTF as well), namely the points for Continental events, ahem, effectively DEI values (at the expense of meritocracy). Those are things he can put on his resume or pitch to his potential student customers after retirement. That's value generation of the new system.

Playing devil's advocate here (and not just because he's one of my countrymen)...if Heming's points are valid, which by many accounts seem to be...are we really resorting to ad hominem arguments to deny his points of view that currently we aren't paying our sport's athletes enough to justify a career in it?

He said he retired because of fines from WTT?
He isnt ranked high enough even after his continental 500 points boost for wtt champions, and he only played 1 smash and no wtt, not even ones within Australia.

Why could Henzell make a career playing in Europe and Heming cant?
I dont think Heming even reached the same level, that is why.
Henzell was a proper top 100 player and under the same era, Heming would still be 400-450.

to expect a wr 400 level player to make it a career playing is tough and I think it is important to acknowledge this.
heming got a boost to 66, and surely he is able to see more money as a player, so why didn't he? I think that should be a better case study.

I have helped another Oceania player to play league in Germany, they do discount wr spots from Oceania. It’s important to face reality and understand how to make an income in table tennis. I am mates with other Australian national champions.

If Heming can justify he is a 60 in the world and cant make money as a player… well I have another 60 I manage and he sure can make money. So clearly, need a better manager 😊

Nevertheless, I have wish him for his coaching success.
But I was very surprised he is dissing WTT, especially he has close to zero interaction with them and surely didn't fail to make an income because of WTT, since he wasn't doing any better prior to WTT

ok, this guy clearly doesn't know what he is talking about it.

if you are a truly 10-50 world rank level in the world (and not inflated 66), not making 50-200k a year means you have a terrible manager.

excuse the swearing, but on his platform, there are a lot of vulgar language.
players do sign contracts with WTT. I can't believe this 2 x olympian pro doesn't know that.... unless he signs things without reading.
there are lots of agreements to sign before you are allowed to play in WTT and this includes that of the youth series already.

As much as I started this thread and dissing WTT on problems that I believe are "fair", Heming is providing a lot of wrong information out there.

WTT have surely given players in terms of marketing a total different approach, compared to that of ITTF days.
Not debating if it will work or not, but WTT has provided a lot on players image for sure.
It isn't WTT's fault if Heming can't get fandoms.

I have a player who know have his own collection of Taiwanese girls fan clubs that make gifts (probably spend dozens of hours) to make a post card that opens up and have different sections where you could pull out different letters.

When you have your own fan base, you have what you call - an audience. And only when there is a decent size audience, you could have an income from that audience.

So heming wants ITTF/WTT to be marketers for all for the WR450 and better players?

heming is a professional life coach, so he understand branding more than I do.

And the same goes for Aruna's case.

https://www.tabletennisdaily.com/forum/topics/saudi-smash-2024.33519/post-456290
Better yet, look at the other players, namely QD, Ovtcharov, Kallberg, Jorgic, and Franziska. Some people suspect they lost in the early rounds (by 3/29) of WTT CS Incheon 2024 deliberately just so they could fly right back to play the ECL 2023/24 on 3/31. Not ideal, but a compromise, nonetheless. That way, if they were to bring WTT to court over the prize money, then they could at least convince the judge that they made every effort within their power to fulfill their end of the "contract" lest WTT makes the claim that they enter into a contract the moment they sign up for a WTT event and/or their names appear in the ITTF TTWR.

https://www.premiumtimesng.com/spor...action-against-world-table-tennis.html?tztc=1
In a series of social media posts on Monday, Aruna directly addresses the WTT: “Why exactly must participation in World Table Tennis CHAMPIONS be mandatory when I have no paid contract with you?

“ Why exactly do I have to leave my club that is paying me salary and play WTT EVENTS? Why exactly is this really mandatory?”
he queried.

So WTT Youth Contender Bangkok and Star Youth Contender Bangkok just finished

Dates from 28 April to 1 May and then 2 May to 4 May, of 8am to 9pm week long crazy schedule.
PS. those hours are just in the hall, haven't factored in leaving and returning to hotel hours.

Other than full day schedules, the players/coaches struggled to even find time to eat.
I wonder how much of this is legal or illegal for minors.
