Romania also did that a few years ago after winning the European championship
I can't believe I already forgot that lol.

That said, it is different when you win the final vs when you have matches to be played after yours.

Hugo truly has beef with the French. Haha.

He can't beat the Lebrun brothers and now he's struggling with Coton and about to lose to him as well.

Seriously, what happened to the Hugo Calderano that won the World Cup and the Silver Medal in the World Championships last year?

Hugo looked very off. Everything went long on his forehand.
This was a level up from all the players he had played prior in the event, so it isn't just about his form, but about the opposition.

It’s easy to be young and hungry and play carefree, don’t have to worry about carrying your country’s hope on your lone shoulders and just go all out to win.
It’s 100 times harder to be Hugo in this match.

Just saying

(not taking away from anyone’s brilliant performance in such situation)
That is true but if the level difference is as large as reflected in the world ranking. It shouldn't matter. That it does matter shows the level difference is not that large at all.

I agree, but nevertheless he should have stepped up and won it.

World #5 vs #23 in my view is not that large a gap, certainly not in a Teams event setting like this. There were bigger upsets ranking-wise in Teams.

The skills abilities were clearly there

I can't disagree more. There is a significant difference between a top 5 player and a top 25 player usually. Losing 0-3 (the way Hugo did) makes no sense. He should have won at least a game.

Still calling Coton the next LGY?
The LGY in him did show up in late G1 and mid-G3 against that Calderano. Refer to the LGY vs Harimoto versus LGY vs ML at World Cup 2024.
