R-E-S-P-E-C-T!!!

Lubomir Pistej is a table-tennis pro as well as sandpaper bat finalist.
So is Andrew Baggaley, his opponent in that video. Why is it a big deal to play table tennis, sand paper and hardbat and are you making a joke by considering them all different sports?

They are not? Wow! One surely learns new things when participating in an international forum. Sandpaper & Hard bat are two different sport is it not? Or are they the same? Educated me! Educated me! Where I am located, it is only table-tennis. Sandpaper and hardbat is a foreign / alien thingamagik.

They use the same net and often the same balls. The major difference is the equipment for hitting the ball - usually all wood with sandpaper (just as hardbat has no sponge ans requires all wood as well). Many players play both for various reasons as long as there is money involved.

Man, sandpaper with modern strokes (and styles) and the point is still so short (and boring - no short game at all). Just another proof that messing with equipment rules is a total waste of time and money.

Table tennis simply follows the Olympic motto. Take it or leave it.

Topspin is the way to go, but what equipment rules does is make the game have tolerances and limits. The serve and serve return errors tend to be less in hardbat and sandpaper.

Are the sandpaper the same ones you buy from the hardware / DIY store? Or are they special type specifically for this sport? What about the blade? Can one use say Falcima / Clipper / SK 7 / Septear?

This is kinda a Child of poverty. Malaisians call the game Liha, beggars would play the game for impossibility to get standard rubbers.

All wood blade. We typically use 7 ply limba for the plastic ball. 320 grit (cami) or P400 (fepa) sandpaper.

It is hilarious to see proficient tt players try sandpaper. It usually doesn't last long. They get frustrated very quickly with the ball going into the net every time. One of our coaches likes to yell at them, "No Tenergy!".

This proves that Hardbat and Table Tennis are totally different sport that require different skill set.

Depends on the playing level. Obviously you can't hit the ball exactly the same but with practice to adapt contact point and stroke contact depth, it comes together.
