Ma Lin was announced to have joined UMMC just months after one of their leading players Michael Maze had to withdraw due to injury, Ma Lin didn’t get off to a good start for the team due to having a wrist injury however he promised he would be much better this time round. The former Olympic champion kept his promise as he was able to come through for the team winning all of his crucial matches in the final.

UMMC were able to clinch a 4-3 victory in the first leg match, Ma Lin was able to win both of his matches against two world class players Dimitrij Ovtcharov and Vladimir Samsanov, the third point was secured by Ma Lin and Tan Ruiwu as they defeated Samsanov and Smirnov 3-2. Tan Ruiwu secured the fourth and final point by overcoming Smirnov.

Orenburg was able to take revenge on UMMC in the second leg as they were able to take the 4-3 victory this time, Ma Lin was able to overcome Alexei Smirnov 3-2 before Ovtcharov levelled the score at one game each after his 3-1 win over Shibaev. Samsanov then put Orenburg ahead by overcoming Tan Ruiwu 3-2, yet again the score was then equal at 2-2 after Ma Lin and Tan Ruiwu defeated Samsanov and Smirnov in three straight games. Ma Lin gave the third point to UMMC after a 3-1 win over Ovtcharov, however Smirnov and Samsanov secured the last two points for Orenburg and victory.

This meant that there was to be a deciding game after both teams winning one match each, it was to be close yet again between the two teams. Tan Ruiwu started off the lead for UMMC with a 3-1 defeat over Alexei Smirnov (11-7, 11-3, 9-11, 11-5), Hou Yingchao replaced Ma Lin and was able to take the second point for UMMC with a 3-1 win over Dimitrij Ovtcharov (14-12, 11-8, 2-11, 11-8). Vladimir Samsanov was able to secure the first point for Orenburg as he beat Shibaev 3-1 (7-11, 11-4, 11-3, 11-7), there was then another change to the UMMC team this time in the doubles as Tan Ruiwu teamed up with Shibaev and despite the change in partners the pair were still able to defeat Samsanov and Smirnov 3-1 (11-7, 9-11, 12-10, 11-5).

Ovtcharov was able to keep Orenburg’s hopes intact as he claimed the next point for his team with a 3-0 win over Tan Ruiwu, however Shibaev was able to clinch the final deciding point for his team after losing his previous matches he was able to defeat Alexei Smirnov 3-1 (11-5, 6-11, 11-8, 11-7) securing UMMC’s second title this season after they won the ETTU Cup.
