Marty Supreme table tennis film

Saw Marty Supreme yesterday and it was good. It is a character story, Uncut Gems (as others have said) style rollercoaster that happens to be wrapped in a 50s TT skin with plenty of movie BS rather than any kind of real/serious TT movie but that's completely fine. The TT CGI was pretty funny and obviously fake to us but it wasn't excessively silly or anything overall. Notably, any kind of pimple user can now say "well, if it was good enough for Marty Supreme then it is good enough for me" or "I want to be like Marty Supreme" (even if he had hardbat SP specifically which none of us will have, we can ignore that precision).

Agree! I read about him just after his death and shared an article with my club, turns out many of the older members knew him very well and used to trave with him to Irish matches years back. An amazing man by all accounts.

Was at the Portland MLTT Saturday match this weekend and it was basically sold out, seats full! I have gone to every Portland weekend since the start of the league and while Portland has always had some of the biggest crowds, this weekend was a new record. What other reason other than this movie would have caused such a jump in attendance? I definitely noticed more ‘casuals’ and non players than other matches.

Will this translate to more players in the US? Maybe. TT is one of those ‘cliff’ sports where people can progress naturally to a certain point and be the best (like the people that are the best at their work, bar, gym, etc) and then when they finally try to play at a club or against a player that produces real spin, that cliff in skill level is usually too much and it tends to dissuade people from continuing. I think it’s just the small percentage of folks that get addicted and gain hunger for the sport from those losses, that are willing to push themselves up over the cliff.

If 100 people try TT and only 5 stick around into club and competitive level, then this movie getting 1000 people to try it means we’ll get 50 people joining the ranks long term. Every bit counts..

You watched this film with my wife and sisters over the holiday season. It's fair to say there's 10% of table tennis going on in the movie. Entertaining for sure but wouldn't call it a table tennis movie

Watched the movie last night, didn't like it at all.
As already mentioned, it's only10% table tennis so It's not really a "table tennis movie".
The Marty character is a complete jerk: obnoxious, cocky, selfish, unreliable you can't identify with him or like him.
The table tennis scenes are unrealistic to someone who plays table tennis and unimpressive to those who doesn't.
This movie won't do any good to the sport.

To quote myself briefly, on the sidelines of this film, I must sadly report the passing of Norbert Van de Walle. A multiple Belgian champion (16 times, including 6 in the singles), and a member of the US Table Tennis Hall of Fame for his years playing for the US national team.
Norbert has turned 85.

I have seen the movie and lets just say pingpong wise it was very unrealistic. Looks like they played without a ball and then animated a ball bouncing around.
