I bought a Tibhar umpire kit for $8 USD... as a qualified umpire, I sometimes feel compelled to umpire/scorekeep tourney matches and make a professional presentation.
At a recent seniors tourney, I did such in a doubles match... had my kit at the ready... a gent on side did a blatant illegal serve... gent served right out of his hand and served it right by a former CNT pro... I called let and explained serve was illegal, no toss. His next serve he did the same thing and I awarded point to other team... gent was furious and could not believe I could or would call such a serve illegal... next serve on that team the lady tossed ball directly backwards into her bat with no toss... I immediately called let and awarded point to other team... backwards toss, no vertical, no 6 inches...
I was then immediately removed from scorekeeping, I was exceeding authority, shoulda been scorekeeping only. Even though this was a sanctioned tourney and rules do apply, since there was no official umpire from the tourney assigned to the table, under USATT laws, the players have to umpire their own match and ask the referee to assign an umpire if there are disputes. I shoulda let the former CNT dispute illegal serves.
Something wrong with me and my brain, I dislike watching illegal serves and not calling them. The former CNT player smiled when I called illegal serve... it was like he never saw an umpire call an illegal serve for decades. The ITTF umpires want to keep their blue card status... so they do not rock the boat.
