I think the key is to press as much as needed so that tha paddle becomes a part of your body like an extension of your hand.

I guide the paddle with my index finger when i serve and press a little with my thumb, the other 3 fingers are forming a small fist under the handle giving free wrist motion, and it feels like I can do whatever motion I want with my paddle
