[The Fact | Senior Reporter Yoo Byung-cheol] It has been confirmed that Oh Sang-eun (49), head coach of the men's national table tennis team, suddenly resigned last week.
In a phone call with <The Fact> on the 15th, Coach Oh said, "There was a conflict of opinion within the (men's) national team regarding the composition of doubles pairs. I felt that 'this can't go on any longer,' so I expressed my intention to resign last week, and the Korea Table Tennis Association accepted it."
Coach Oh was appointed as the head coach of the men's national table tennis team for a two-year term starting in January 2025 following an open recruitment process (Women's team coach Seok Eun-mi). His term is set to last until the end of this year, after the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games (September 19–October 4). National team player Oh Jun-seong (20, Korea Exchange), who is emerging as the ace of Korean men's table tennis, is the coach's biological son.
Regarding this, a table tennis insider explained, "Coach Oh Sang-eun must be very disappointed. Since his son (Oh Jun-seong) is an undisputed national team player, the Korea Table Tennis Association appointed him as coach on the premise that this would be the case. It is difficult for him to accept the criticism now that there is an issue of fairness due to his son. A similar incident occurred at his former team, Mirae Asset Securities."
Coach Oh Sang-eun is a former star player who, along with Yoo Seung-min (current President of the Korean Olympic Committee) and Joo Se-hyuk, served as the face of Korean men's table tennis to the extent of threatening China. He won two medals in four Olympic appearances and harvested 11 medals in 12 World Championships appearances. As a coach, he served as the head coach of the men's national team at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (held in 2021), and led the team to a silver medal in doubles (Jang Woo-jin = Lim Jong-hoon) at the 2021 World Championships in Houston and a gold medal in the men's team event at the Asian Championships in Doha.
With the men's and women's national table tennis teams departing on the 15th to participate in international competitions, it is reported that the men's team will be operated for the time being under a system led by Head Coach Choi Young-il and coaches Yoon Jae-young and Hwang Sung-hoon.)
