Recently, the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) officially announced that six events will be held at the 2028 Los Angeles (LA) Olympics: men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles, mixed doubles, and mixed team events. Men's and women's doubles were added as the men's and women's team events were removed from the existing events and the mixed team event was created. The most gold medals were at stake among all racket events, and upon hearing this news, 'doubles master' Lim Jong-hoon (28, Korea Exchange) couldn't help but smile of delight.
Lim Jong-hoon, who teamed up with Ahn Jae-hyun (Korea Exchange), won the World Table Tennis (WTT) US Smash Men's Doubles held in Las Vegas, USA on the 13th, with a thrilling comeback victory over the world's No. 1 Felix Lebrun-Alexis Lebrun (France) pair. Thanks to this, his world ranking also rose to 2nd place. Lim Jong-hoon, who won a bronze medal in the mixed doubles with Shin Yu-bin (Korean Air) at the 2024 Paris Olympics, repeated the bronze medal in the same event at the World Championships this year, and has achieved two wins in the men's doubles and two wins in the mixed doubles in the WTT series, hitting the ceiling. We met Lim Jong-hoon, who is currently competing in the WTT series in Argentina and Brazil, at the Korea Exchange Gymnasium in Incheon on the 21st just before his departure to hear about his determination.
Lim Jong-hoon said about his recent upward trend, "My first goal this year was to win a big competition, and I think I achieved it well." He added, "When I heard that there would be a men's doubles event at the Olympics, I thought I should focus more on doubles, and I feel good because I think I'm getting good results."
●No international competition gold… Definitely in LA!
The first time I heard about the possibility of men’s doubles being included in the Olympics was in April at the WTT Contender in Shaanxi Province, China, when local reporters asked Lim Jong-hoon, who is strong in doubles, what it would be like to compete against Chinese players.
Lim Jong-hoon said, “It’s not certain that I will go to the LA Olympics, but I think I have a really good opportunity,” and his eyes lit up. He has established himself as a force that threatens the Great Wall of China not only in men’s doubles but also in mixed doubles, but he is not satisfied with the situation.
Lim Jong-hoon said, “Yubin and I won medals at the Asian Games, World Championships, and Olympics, but these are all bronze medals,” and added, “We often say that if we work harder in the future, we can aim for gold or silver medals.”
Lim Jong-hoon and Shin Yu-bin won bronze in the mixed doubles in Paris last year, reviving the streak of table tennis medals that had been cut off since the silver medal in the men's team event at the 2012 London Games. In particular, they took a selfie with the Chinese players who won the gold medals at the awards ceremony, as well as the runner-up North Korean team of Ri Jong-sik and Kim Kum-yong, which became a hot topic. This scene was also selected as one of the top 10 news stories of the Paris Olympics by AFP.
Regarding the possibility of a thaw in sports between the two Koreas, especially in table tennis, with the recent inauguration of the new government, when asked if he was acquainted with any North Korean players, he said, "I don't know Ri Jong-sik well, but I am close with Ham Yu-song and An Ji-song, whose faces I have become familiar with at international competitions."
Meanwhile, Lim Jong-hoon said, “I saw Ham Yoo-song at the Military Sports Festival, and he has considerable skills that can compete with (Paris men’s singles gold medalist) China’s Pan Zhendong,” and added, “If I pair up with Ham Yoo-song and have enough practice time, I think I can achieve good results.”
Of course, Lim Jong-hoon’s current best friend is Ahn Jae-hyun. Since joining the Korea Exchange, Ahn Jae-hyun, who is two years younger, has been in sync with each other and knows what each other is thinking. He said, “I’ve known Jae-hyun since he was little, and we also have a dog in common,” and added, “That’s why we relieve stress by going to dog cafes together during breaks and talking about dogs.”
●“Table tennis doubles is also all about human relationships”
Lim Jong-hoon’s immediate goal is to win gold medals in the men’s doubles and mixed doubles at the Aichi Nagoya Asian Games next year. He said, “Since it’s a competition held in Japan, I have to keep a close eye on the Japanese players.” Overcoming the wall of China, the world's strongest player, is still a challenge. Lim Jong-hoon pointed out that whether Wang Chuqin (Paris mixed doubles gold medalist) will participate in the doubles will affect the goal of winning the gold medal.
Lim Jong-hoon said, "If Wang Chuqin and Pan Zhendong, who are strong in the backhand, form a men's doubles team, the winning percentage may not even be 1%," but predicted, "However, since the two players are enemies, it will be difficult for such a monstrous combination to form." In fact, it is said that Pan Zhendong and Wang Chuqin did not even practice together while competing for the men's singles gold medal in Paris.
Lim Jong-hoon, who is getting married at the end of November, reads books to stay psychologically stable. The most recent book he read was 'How to Win Friends and Influence People' by American author and lecturer Dale Carnegie. He said, "While playing table tennis, I learned that human relationships are important," and "(the book) was a great help in that the relationship with a doubles partner is ultimately a human relationship."

(●Smiles of delight at the possibility of men's doubles at the Olympics●
