I still cannot wrap my head around this concept that Wang Yidi who is not a noob in the Pro Tours is unable to adapt to difference in spin or control the spin. It still cannot explain the disparity in the outcome btw WYD vs Odo against Sabine.

You actually see this quite often in high level athletes. You get used to a rhythm and it's very uncomfortable when someone presents a different pattern. Adaptability is a rarer skill than, say, explosiveness.

Because you are focused on the level of the player, not the nature of the problem. Many players in table tennis retain the same kinds of strengths and weaknesses at every level they have played, they just get good enough that it takes a stronger level of player to expose them. Think of Sun Yingsha, who is currently the best player in the world, having her backhand issues exploited by Chen Meng ans Wang Manyu. Obviously, Sun Yingsha's backhand is awesome, and it takes a certain level of player with threats in other parts of their game to exploit it, including someone eho can return her serve without losing the point on the third ball (which usually means it has to be a teammate, but not necessarily). But if you can get her backhand to backhand and place the ball awkwardly enough that she isn't able to pivot because you can place the ball down the line, you are in the match.

I uave seen usatt 2300 players lose to usatt 2000 pips players and I have seen a guy whonhad good serves and long pips on backhand also gain rating points after making the same kind of switch Winter made. Sometimes it is less about the material and more about the problem it poses for players who don't know how to overwhelm you when you use it and therefore give you time to use your forehand. But a lot ot it also depends on how early you were exposed to these rubbers in your development. I have seen players beat choppers or pips backhand players 300 pts higher rated than them for the same matchup reason in reverse, so Winter is always susceptible to someone who knows how to handle the anti and who can counter her forehand.

Sometimes it is less about the material and more about the problem it poses for players

This is especially true for lower levels.
People admit to their weaknesses and use pips/anti, and all of a sudden they have an advantage over people who have their weakness playing against pips/anti.
The higher the level, the more you actually have to have an idea of how to play with the pips/anti other than just somehow fumbling it in to the opponent´s ball, and you´ll need a weapon on the other side of the racket as well.

As I stated at the very beginning, the thing Winter needed most was luck to avoid JNT players, which she did, and a year later she has only gotten past 1 of them (1W8L in 2025, 0W1L in 2026), whom is strictly speaking not even on the JNT.

Getting past an injured CXT and WYD, both of whom are known to be poor against combination players, is nothing to write home about. It doesn't change the fact that some relatively unknown players can give Winter hell and that's often what happens at the Olympics.

Almost 4 months later, 2 more JNT scalps for Winter, specifically the perfect matchup Hashimoto at WTTC 2026 and a coachless Hirano since 9/2024 at WTT SCT Ljubljana 2026, which should've been something encouraging, only to be completely overshadowed by the next-round beatdown at the hands of Diaz...
