try to look at the point where his racket hits the ball
if it hits under the ball its usually underspin, on the side - sidespin and on top of the ball is topspin

for amateurs this step should do the trick at the moment till you get the feeling, afterwards:

but this is only a very easy way to see it, its actually not that hard to touch with the racket the bottom of the ball and still put topspin on the ball.

if the blade is going up (at ball contact) its topspin, if the blade remains (at ball contact) low its backspin

also (depending how good your opponents are) be aware of no spin serves :)
