Speed, Spin, Control Ratings. Are they any use?

I usually buy rubber from Bribar and they tell me that the ratings they publish are based on testing the rubbers (which would seem an awful lot of testing!). However, when I compare the Bribar ratings with those on the table tennis database I find huge inconsistencies. For example, when I look at Geospin Tacky and Tenergy 05 FX (the 2 rubbers I am currently using) and compare with Tihbar 5Q Sound Power Update and Tihbar Aurus Sound (which I have never used but have been considering), I find that Geospin Tacky is the highest rated of the 4 for Control by Bribar (which is what I would expect) but the lowest rated of the 4 by the table tennis database! Also Tenergy FX is rated 3rd of the 4 for spin whereas it is 1st of the 4 on the database.

Sped spin ratings rolled into ONE NUMBER by ANYONE are NOT an accurate assessment of the performance. Different rubbers and blade combos perform differently given different kind of impacts and different shots. H3 might be rated slow, which it is on a weak stroke, but on a full contact forward solid impact, it is quite fast. many rubbers have variences like this. That is why when I refuse to assign an absolute speed value to a NEXY blade, many of them are DUAL IMPACT and perform differently with different impacts.

You see TIBHAR show a RANGE of speed for their blades... like this one, the Tibhar ALL+ rated Champ blade. Rightfully, teh speed range shows upper part of ALL to middle part of OFF MINUS.

Rubbers are pretty much the same. I have said it before and say it again, you have to pair up a rubber with a known stable blade for testing and do a DYNAMIC test using many shots by the same people to be consistent and able to discern differences.

Dan does a great job of that in his video reviews, so pay close attention to how Dan goes about his business.

This statistcs are nonsense also on the tabletennisdb .just ignore them.

Agreed. What we ask is WHY so many manufacturers and resellers use a SINGLE stat to represent the performance of the product.

Why?

Because consumers as a whole (not the rare individual) they pretty much act like controllable sheep and will generally believe anything someone in authority says - we have been trained that way across the world for the last 100+ years. You will frequently hear me say "Run this through your bullcrap filters before you believe what I say". This is keeping it real.

This is a sad state of affairs, but I believe it to be true, I believe Bob believes this also.

Ratings are absolute nonsense. The only somewhat useful comparable statistic I can think of would be a spring frequency and spring constant rating for the blade's speed, but that'd not be entirely accurate either and really going into scientific mumbo jumbo territory.

Let's not even get to the fact that the blade/rubber will feel entirely different in your hand than a pro's.

Funny that you mention grip pressure, I have been trying to think about moving from a more traditional grip to a shallow grip with only barely the fingers on the rubber. I figured , it will ease up the pressure on my connecting muscles , especially the big one under the arm ( not the forearm ) , also it will mean less transition from service grip to actual play.

A lot of my game is about wrist. Any tips or things to watch out for @Der_Echte ? May be I should start a new thread , instead of hijacking this one ?
Just the grip pressure change along will greatly alter the shot, in terms of both speed and spin, so does the acceleration at impact, so many variables, it is near impossible to measure.

Hijack Away (At your own risk)

I have hajacked so many threads that if you meet me in real life you would think that I have a patch over one eye, a sword hanging down my side, and a hook for my right hand.

However, I do think this is an excellent question and a good candidate for a separate thread. (That we can eventually hijack :D )
